Astanley 11,580
I enjoyed Monty halls programme . but he hardly "piched up and lived off the land " Gnash , spent a good bit doing an old cottage type thing up , kept a few chickens and pigs , grew a bit of veg , his dog was just a companion , he got involved with the locals and it was a decent programme . but not a self sufficiency type show

As has been said, it was Monty Hall's Great Escape. Clip below gives a bit of a flavour for what he had up there. He basically relocated to a remote village in North West Scotland and, from memory, scratched a bit of living what with keeping a few hens and pigs and growing a bit of veg.., and a bit of bartering with the locals. The North West coast of Scotland is, IMHO, one of the most beautiful places on the entire planet, but I don't think that I could spend my life up there. I'd love to be in a postion to do something like he did for a year. Live in a remote place like Applecross for a full year through the four seasons, raising a few animals and crops...., getting right back to basics. I think it would be great to live for a while without ever really having to worry about what time it was..., or even what day of the week it was.

Neal 1,873
I've only been to Applecross once and that was back in the late 80s/early 90s sometime after the coastal track had been turned into a road. I stayed in a campsite with red deer wandering through it and left early in the morning via the other route (I think it's called the Bealach na Ba mountain pass...apologies if the spelling's wrong) and sat at the high point having my breakfast overlooking the Sound of Raasay and the Cuillins. Stunning!

mackem 27,573
I remember that program,I remember thinking he was financially well buffered from the reality and hardship of self sufficiency, wasnt he the guy who used a RIB to get up and down sea lochs? The last time I filled a RIB up it cost a small fortune,it must be easy street to be financed by a production budget.

mackem 27,573
Exactly mate, another born on the right side of the tracks who didnt do it as a lifestyle choice but saw a niche in the media market and exploited it,HFW is a businessman, look at the cost of his rivercottage courses ,they aint cheap for a weekend,he might come across as a mildly eccentric bumbling upper class country yokel type but its all contrived and he is sharp as a scalpel blade.
