neil cooney 10,416
Are they beef or lamb tripes Topper ? I used to pay £3 for a beef tripe over 20 years ago because everyone wanted them. Nowadays most abattoirs clean and bleach them and sell them to Poland.
THE GENERAL 1,982
I get 60lb weight of minced tripe now for £20 and usually some chicken along with it. I used to work in a slaughterhall and sold cow bellys to the doggie men for £1 or 10 sheep bellys for £1. I was glad of the extra few pound. After foot and mouth most of that stopped but it's still readily available if your in the know. I wouldn't feed it all the time would prefer the beef better. Full ribeyes, sirloins and rump extra. I buy them in bulk sometimes over 120kg. Freeze it and thaw one at a time and slice, that does me for a few days kept in the fridge.

I've eaten it raw and it's tasteless but cooked properly some people like it. When I was a butcher it was considered a poor persons dish and it was also considered a good remedy for stomach ailments. Nowaday's you see top chefs on TV cooking it as a delicacy. If I remember correctly the way a lot of our customers cooked it for their stomach ulcers was boiled in milk. That was the old way. Gaz_1989 9,539
People slate tripe and say there is no goodness in it. I bet it makes up 40-50% of my dogs diet and she is tip top. Full of energy, working well and looks fit and healthy, coat shining etc. Each to their own but it works for me. Along with tripe she gets brown bread, pasta, red meats, offal, chicken carcass, rabbit, tins of mackeral in tomato, eggs, weetabix, goats milk.
skycat 6,173
As part of a good mixed diet tripe is great, BUT if you are feeding fresh unwashed tripe, you have to feel each bit you feed the dogs to check there are no fencing staples, bits of barbed wire embedded in it. That means kneading each piece carefully. You'd be amazed at the number of staples, those big ones, that are snugly wrapped within the tissue!

If pet shop selling it then should be ok I would imagine... Hope you're not paying through the roof for it though mate ??? I pay 40p for 1lb bag of fresh minced tripe, might be worth trying to source a good supplier as I would think you'll be paying way more at pet shop...
