CZ American 17HMR and DM80 mod

Ive just fitted a DM80 mod to my 19" CZ American .17HMR what a peice of kit that is , it totally kills the crack and makes it sound like a .22 rimmie.

For anyone considering buying a .17 mod it is well worth contacting Dave Mercer (DM80) for a quote first.

Yes ive known Dave a few years and his work is second to none, do a search on some of the other forums eg Airgun bbs for more positive feedback.

dm80 mods are very well made. and as good as anything on the market .loads of lads on the bbs have them and there are some write ups on there about the mod and how good it is. i should have one for mine next week.

I've read loads of good reports about DM80's mods, and no bad ones.

 

I just wish i could get at him to order one for my .204 but its quite a job I hear to contact him, I've tried email.

I dont even know what a DM80 looks like, the spec etc, weight, length, diameter.

I bought one when I collected my CZ HMR, seems fab to me but I've nothing to compare it to as it's my first rifle.

We all seem to be getting carried away with Sound moderators these days......me included...I have them on all my rifles, PCP air rifle, rimfires and centrefires. But the world seems to forget that whilst they are very useful and dramatically reduce the overal noice from my FAC PCP and are great with sub sonic .22LR noboby has found a way to stop the sonic crack.

 

Supersonic ammo will appear quieter to the shooter as the moberator reduces the noise of the cartridge explosion but makes no difference at the point of delivery, ie down the road when the bullet (hopefully) hits its intended target!

 

.17 HMR is designed to be fast and no sub sonic version is available, it would completely negate the whole point of .17MHR if there was! All the moderator will do is make life a little quieter for the shooter and his immediate party. The whole of the rest of the world will have to put up with the sonic boom whatever you do!

 

Don't get me wrong I am still a fan of them and they do seem to help with muzzle flip on the centrefires, but they can in many cases also f*** up the whole balance of the gun, change the zero, especially if using a bipod, they can cost a fortune and don't forget the barrel screw cutting, FAC variation and a longer rifle slip!

Out of interest at what point of flight does a round make the crack, ie distance/time from the point of explosion?

A .22LR sub sonic with a good moderator is very quiet, but it only produces the performance of a .22LR sub sonic of course, and many applications require more than this.

 

We need someone cleverer than me on the physics side to explain the sonic boom which occurs around 1100 ft sec, also where it actually occurs! There are several rounds out there over 4000 ft sec and many over 3000 ft sec, but the boom will vairy as to where it occurs as the gases escaping from the barrel just behind the bullet also play havoc with air flows. Most rounds also go through the sound barrier whilst still in the barrel, but they don't go boom in the barrel, only after leaving it. I would be very interested if someone could explain this one as well!

is this because the sound does not pass through the steal barrel fast enough to be audible in the faction of a second that the bullet is traveling down the barrel.

 

D in physics at A-level so dont take this as gospel because it's ether wrong or one of many reasons.
