The Legacy Of The Hw80

Recommended Posts

I bought one in .177 when they first came out, and it absolutely blinded the opposition, all my mates had .22 BSA airsporters, mercurys meteors, and the odd Diana, they simply could not believe the ranges I was dropping squirrels and bunnies, I never chrono tested it, but I suspect it may have been rather hot, from the factory, I still prefer the look of the mk1s over the more modern ones, and will get another one day, the only rifle I reckon rivalled the 80 back then, was my tuned BSF b55 Bavaria, what a rifle that was, and still kick myself to this day for swapping it, cant remember if it was a Sharp innova or FWB sport :hmm: interestingly enough, I never liked underlevers back then, but now have a tuned .177 hw77 that is a real tack driver, and quiet and smooth, very smooth for a .177 springer, old it may be but the hw80 is still an excellent air rifle, one that I suspect will be around for another 30 odd years or more.

Mac you are a kind man! Thank you for your endorsements about my shooting. Aye, I've found this thread so, here goes all expectations...Ahem!   AN ESSAY, NAY, LOVE LETTER TO MY DEAR BELOVED HW80

The best, most smoothest killing machine that HW ever rolled out of their factory is the 77....without a shadow of a doubt....   A venom tuned 77 is about as good as it gets. There ain't no recoil,

Bigmac97KT has recently given my HW80 .22 a facelift with a complete refurb of the stock.

He's done an incredible job and added an adjustable buttpad which has totally transformed my beloved '80 in both looks and handling. I went out with it tonight on one of my permissions I've not been able to visit for a few weeks and the rifle didn't miss a beat.

14 rabbits, 6 woodpigeons from the fields and 4 ferrals out of the barns at the end of the session.

It's nice to have other rifles in my collection. But none of them can replace this fabulous German classic.

Would I have another? Absolutely, if a second spring break barrel was something I need, but I don't. I have a perfect example that cannot be bettered and can never be sold. But I could never put anyone off from buying one for themselves.

I bought my 80 for £75 missing its trigger adjustment screw no real blueing as such just a sort of brown colour lots of dings to the stock but then it is 36 years old .it had the remains of a cocking aid and and an angled cut barrel .bit of a sad state and firing at least 18ftp (since found my old chrono has been reading low)

It now has a massive silencer a 77 spring piston sleave tbt kit to the spring and a 12mm short stroke I also spent three hours polishing with a drill .

It has a 4-12x50 ao mountmaster making it even heavier but It is very quiet and shoots at around 10.5 ftp on h&n ftt everyone who shoots it loves it but its .22 and I mostly shoot hft so it doesn't get as much use as it should .

Its also the oldest one I have come across there was one very close at the bb boingerbash and he bought his new in 1980 .i will get the numbers on here if anyone is interested?

So I have a period 36 year old well battered 80 that shoots near perfect I was actually hitting more with this than my .22 pcp last time I used it .

Strangely it only likes one spacer on one side of the barrel lock tried all else but it wont have it !
