skycat 6,174
Fascinating stuff The biggest difference I see between a ferret and the mink is that the mink's eyesight is obviously far superior to that of a ferret, not to mention its tenacity in pursuing the lure which is moving quite fast. And the amazing intelligence of the mink too: quite incredible how he worked things out and eventually cached in the carrier. I wonder is anyone has ever tried to train a ferret to do this? mick1212 389
I noticed in an earlier vid you had a weighing cage do you notice much difference in behaviour with the minks weight he looks more leaner than when you first got him Quote Link to post

When I first started training mink I didn't bother to use any weight control, but as my training methods progressed I eventually began using weight control with my mink, just as I had done with my falconry hawks and falcons. If a mink is too thin, they become TOO obsessed with food, and they don't have very good endurance. If they are too fat, then the mink's drive is greatly reduced, and it is more difficult to get them to respond to training. At just the right weight a mink will respond to the food call promptly, and will work harder to find prey than they would otherwise. Some mink can be worked fat, but they are typically not as successful while hunting, and can be quite difficult to retrieve after the hunt. Now after having said that, my buddy did catch 5 rabbits last week with a mink that was far too fat, but getting her back after the hunt was a little annoying, as she just wanted to keep running around in the rock piles we were hunting in. (The mink actually caught all five, as we don't use nets for rabbits) 1 Quote Link to post
