Air Rifle Calibre Advice.

Its going to be an HW100 has to be a "T" variant because I'm a lefty, haven't decided on standard or carbine yet. I did have a couple of scopes kicking around here somewhere, but I haven't seen them for some time, so will probably treat myself to a new one. No idea what and am open to suggestions, likewise pellets.

 

I'm starting from scratch kit wise, so all and any views and advice are more than welcome.

I'd definately give them both a go before parting with your hard earned cash. There is some excellent advice above. The difference is so small, its really down to the shooter. We all have our own preferences, but this is relative to ourselves and we, are not you.

 

Whatever calibre you go for, get a good reliable make. Have you thought about the model / manufacturer? PCP or spring? Scope?

as the others have said, get yourself down to the range and have a good play with as many as possible and see what suits you before you buy something.

Well, I've never owned one (a HW100) myself, but they are very 'hot' at the moment and I know lots here use them and rate them highly. Great manufacturer so you should be more than OK with than make / model.

 

Scopes, a really cheap but excellent range are the Nikon range. Best glass out there, very clear, lots of light. I'm not a fan of the recticle style in them, but again, that's personal. Other than that, the Hawke range are really good and will get you going and their Panorama IR / EV range is very good IMO. I'm sure others have their views on other scopes. I'm a mill-dot fan, but you might not be. If you go .22, these are good for compensating with range. But hey, get a good make, fully covered, and you will be fine.

 

No real difference in rifle and carbine in PCP other than shot capacity really. A full rifle with a silencer, will be lengthy....but no probs with it really once you know that. I've just ordered an AA S410 classic with a silencer, same issue, long barrel but I'm not fussed about that (I already have the carbine). No difference in power for my AAs, and I'm sure thats the same for HW, but others will correct me here if that's wrong.

 

A good gun shop should have lots of scopes for you to look through and sample. Dont just buy on the net!!!! Support your local gunshop - assuming they are not arses!

That S410 looks like a really nice piece of kit and they do a lefty version as well.

 

The thing that attracted me most to the HW100 (apart from the fact that I'm a fan of German engineering) was the simplicity of the magazine, my only previous experience with air rifles was a brief encounter with a rapid 7 which I thought was a bit of a faff to load. I only used it a couple of times before moving it on.

 

I was initially looking at a huntsman regal, but reading through a couple of threads on here put me off it a bit.

Get a 7. The faff is true, it's shit, but what you lose on loading times you make up for in legacy

I've heard lots of people rave about the 7, including Rez, so I reckon there must be something good to that baby. The magazine on the AAs is simplicity itself, no real faff as far as I'm aware - you just load and go. When in the field I have separate mags loaded up and ready to swap. I dont like mucking around in the cold loading up pellets into mags when sat in the freezing woods etc. So buy a spare mag whatever you get!

 

HW or AA - excellent gear. The rest is down to you - but if you then cant hit a barn door - you cant blame the equipment!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking other peoples kit, I'm sure the rapid is a very capable tool. But I'd bought it on a whim because my shooting buddy was using an air gun to good effect so I thought I'd give it a go. But ultimately it didn't stack up against my rim fire.

 

Is there any way to disable auto correct on here?
