Danielm7353 3
I know it's a bit late, but id like the get my little lurcher to retrieve. He is a whippet hound collie cross. Extremely tight on the turn and unreal on the lanp. He is now 3 years old, he is soft mouthed and catching and sitting with the rabbit in his mouth, which suits me grand but I'd like to get him to retrieve. Any ideas how to start him Quote Link to post

chisler 90
As Joe777 says getting recall 100% helps, the way I've got mine retrieving straight to hand has been to rap and sow a rabbit skin on at first a small 1/2 lb gundog training dummy, then just throw it a couple of feet in front then tell the dog to fetch it, once he picks it up recall him to you then hand in collar and then I give the command 'give' whilst gently taking it out of their mouth, at this point depending one whether the dog is food or toy (their best or favorite one) orientated I give them their reward and plenty of fuss, you give to me, you get something back , keep doing this, repetition is a key, once it's going well just increase the distance. Will only say it has worked for me in the past and present. Good luck chisler Quote Link to post
