gnipper 6,498
Is it an infected nail bed?
Joe1888 672
Dont think so? Ill be honest, i f****d up... Few nights ago it was abit bloody around the top of the nail, i give it a couple days cleaning/lead walkng and let her off the lead today, she was moving fine outside, didnt notice any problems then when in house noticed she wasnt putting weight on it.. Ive had it in chlorhex scrub today and salt water, could be wrong, think most of the pain is at the top rather bottom of nail Ive added more pictures, can see condition of nail better.. I had a problem with pups nail while ago ,alittle different situation... advice i was given at the time was cut it right back and it will heal better and the advice was correct. Am thinking the same for bitch?

socks 32,253
The nail is not that bad and doesn't look infected so will grow back pretty quickly ... The nail bed looks infected to me and on top cleaning four times a day may need some ant biotics ........

gnipper 6,498
My old dog used to get it from our peaty soil, a toothbrush is good for getting right in the nail bed and cleaning it out.

sandymere 8,263
I'll 2nd the 3 answers above, don't let mud dry around the nail beds as it causes problems making the skin pull back and away from the nail letting infection into the nail bed. if there is a build-up of dirt wash the feet in some warm salty water after working/exercise and use a nail brush gently for more stubborn dirt. Broken nail ends can also allow infection in so again if notice broken nails wash and trim if able. Edited February 5, 2015 by sandymere
skycat 6,173
I would imagine there could well be an infection in the quick inside the claw, which is also affecting the nail bed. If if were my dog I'd cut the claw off as close to the to the flesh as possible, then keep clean at all times, wash twice a day in salt water. Keep it away from earth mud etc. Put a special dog boot or a drip bag over it for a fortnight while it seals itself off. Broken claws often get muck up inside them and then infected. gnipper 6,498
Someone told me to cut a nail right back one time but I couldn't bring myself to do it and I don't think the dog would have ever let me touch his feet again either.
