Maximus Ferret 2,063
is bottomless black..what we in ireland call peatbog. The soil is something similar but a lot deeper and better drained. It's kept clean and is good for growing cabbage, sprouts, spuds etc. Back in the 70's I was working on black fen on one of those potato harvesters with conveyor belts for spuds and another for stones. The weather was wet and the tractor pulling it bogged in. They hooked up another to the front of the first and that bogged in too so we all fecked off to the pub. 1 Quote Link to post
fourlurchers 280
why do folk crow about their dogs when the hare isn't run when at its maximum potential, surely the best test for dog is when the ground is in favour of the hare with law to reach a realistic conclusion of the dog? 5 Quote Link to post

nighteyes 275
sticky seed not enough to clog the hare but enough to slow the dog up abit they seem to be able go over the top if it , turf the fly on but its just as good running for the dog imo Quote Link to post
fourlurchers 280
sticky for the dog but not the hare ? water or sticky will hinder the hares true ability, don't include the dog just the land crop that will see the hare run its best Quote Link to post

It's the peaty areas found on some parts of the fens, one day I will go down and get a bag of it for my veg plot, and maybe take the dog and see if I can get something to go with the veg Quote Link to post

3 Turns 326
On the wet seed when your dogs sinking and hares flying over the top then you see what your dogs made ofI DONT AGREE.WHEN YOUR DOG IS SINKING TO ITS WRISTS YOUR RUNNING YOUR DOG AT A DISADVANTAGE AND THATS JUST STUPID. YOUR DOG IF BETWEEN35/75 IBS IS 4/5 TIMES HEAVIER THAN A HARE WHO WILL SKIP ALONG THE SURFACE WHILE YOUR DOGS CONSTANTLY DIGGING A WHOLE. TOO ME THATS NOT A FAIR RACE. IF YOUR GIVING THE HARE FAIR LAW AND ITS SEES THE DOG EARLY YOUR RUNNER HASNT A HOPE IN HELL OF GETTING ON TERMS WITH IT. HARD OPEN GROUND SHORT GRASS FAIRLAW NOW WEVE GOT A REAL 1 ON1. 3 Quote Link to post
fox digger 1,086
I dont claim to have good fast hare dogs, never did have a purpose bred hare dog, nor do i want one as its not my cup of tea, doesn't really float my boat!! But i have dogs that will give puss a pretty good fright!!! From what i notice my mutts have reasonable success on them in wet marshy land, a bog, but around me you only get patches of bog surrounded by good green pasture fields, if puss gets a chance to leave the bog (which often they don't) then he will be away for slates!! He seems to up the throttle once he can get his legs in under him and get a firm footing, leaving my poor lada's in his mist!!! 1 Quote Link to post
