Nite-Site Viper 1 - Pulsar 0

Well, they say about mad dogs & Englishmen going out in mid-day sun, but the same crew are the only ones to go out in -2 degree cold.

I picked up the Viper last week, took it out once and struggled with it. I tried walking round using it like a lamp, but it was no use, still spooked the rabbits. Mac had picked up his pulsar so we arranged a trip up mine last night. Frosty, cold, clear night. Bracing I think they call it. It was like walking on cornflakes by 10pm with the ground frost but Mac had made a couple of poly sheets for us to lay up on. They kept me dry, but good lord my nuts froze so bad, they are still not coming out 12 hours later!

We both went off to different spots, there were plenty of mad-dog rabbits out last night so we had plenty of sport. Mac took the laying up parallel to the hedge line position, that way, all the rabbits came out in front of him, BUT he couldn't judge the distance. I lay up 30 yards out but perpendicular to the hedge line, that way I knew the rabbits distance from me BUT unless they came out directly in front of me, I had to turn around to get them in scope. Hmm, any tips from NV users here?

Anyhow, I managed to drop a fat female at 25 yrds to blood the NS Viper. I had shots on 3-4 more rabbits but everyone went clean over the rabbits head. Free hair cuts all round. Too many mil dots. The issue was I had to turn my mag down from x12 to x8 to get the clearest picture on the nite site, so all the rabbits looked smaller than normal and thus I thought they were further away!! Hence the odd mil dot or 2 and hence the hair cuts...damn it.

By 1am it was way too cold so we packed up. I know Mac didn't get anything with the pulsar, it's like a pair of fecking noobs going out with NV at the moment. Watching the video clips online, you lot make it look easy! It bloody isn't. BUT, at £450, it WILL get used and it WILL pay for it's self. £2.50 done, £447.50 to go haha.

Roll on warmer weather!!!

p.s. I forgot to take a pic, but by 1am I couldn't use my hands anyhow.

I did a similar thing for use with my NE500 when plotted up at the orchard. Only tested them in the garden so far and they show up very well and can see the numbers well. Made with small oblongs 2"x3" of white plastikard, with numbers cut out of black plastikard and stuck on. Pegs are what came with a net for my pond, and have an appropriate slit cut into the top. We never plot up but drive around the orchard lamping

Its been interesting reading about you lads getting used to your nv, I can imagine the cursing and such after all these near misses! But you're certainly trying to crack it and I applaud your perseverance and I'm sure you will get there and reap the benefits, its a refreshing, honest account of a nights shooting, keep the updates coming...

I use 6 mag mostly, range estimating is a lot harder, looks like macs got a plan though.

if its been properly fenced the posts should be pretty uniform so shooting down the fence line measure the posts out.

Balls to laying on the floor in this weather, I got permission to drive my motor on my perm the other day and moved some stuff to give me a better view so planning on shooting from the car
