RossM 8,107
Was reading BBC news web and saw a wee bit on their origin, quite interesting, then I searched them and once again it looks like kennel club has proper f****d up another breed. Anyone still have the working type? Wee link http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dandie_Dinmont_Terrier Quote Link to post

jessdale 416
The kennel club registers pedigree dogs, they do not ruin breeds. It's like saying the dvla ruined the Subaru Impreza when the shape of the car was changed. 4 Quote Link to post
General lee 979
The kennel club is the ruination of the dog world and should be banned 3 Quote Link to post
jessdale 416
But don't they implement breed standards that focus on ascetics before working ability ? . No they do not. Dog breeders breed dogs not the KC. Look at the pointer for example. A working bred pointer is a superb animal that can cover a moor , at some speed, looking for a single grouse. A show bred pointer may struggle to find its food dish in a kitchen. There is only one standard for the pointer according to the KC. Dog breeders breed dogs not the KC. socks 32,253
The kennel club sets the breed standard for each dog ... So in other words a pedigree dog registered by the kennel club will look like whatever standard they put down on paper for that individual dog ... Breeders then try and breed to match that standard ... So the kennel club decides what a dog should look like ....... 2 Quote Link to post
jessdale 416
The kennel club keep the standard set by the breed clubs. The individual breed clubs come up with the standard for each breed. Dog breeders breed dogs not the Kc 3 Quote Link to post

Same with staffs, bulldogs, gundogs, deerhounds, most working breeds in fact. Yes it's breeders breeding, but to kc standards, which are ruining most breeds of dog. Spaniels, retrievers, hpr's, pointers and setters all do the job they were bred for yet are KC registered . A working bred springer spaniel is totally different, looks and mental attitude, to a show bred springer but they are both KC registered with the same standard written down . But the standard doesn't mean a thing to the working bred spaniel breeder/worker. The breed clubs write the standard not the KC, they just register the dogs. 3 Quote Link to post

Yes, I get what you're saying, but most people that breed kc/show types are breeding for show only, which is ruining breeds, and it's still all governed by the KC Quote Link to post

Yes, I get what you're saying, but most people that breed kc/show types are breeding for show only, which is ruining breeds, and it's still all governed by the KC The KC only register dogs. If the standard , written by the BREED club not the KC, is not met by a dog it is still KC registered . For example the pointer standard says dogs "desirable" height should be 25-27 inches for a dog. If a dog is 23 inches or 28 inches it is still KC registered but it is not within the guidelines written by the BREED club not the KC. The breed clubs write the standard not the KC. Dog breeders breed dogs the KC just register them. 3 Quote Link to post
jessdale 416
Forget so called breed Standard Judge on ability to what the breed was created for in the first place . That's the only standard in any dog worth anything . I totally agree. If you want a working dog a working pedigree is the only one worthwhile. I was merely pointing out that to blame the Kc for "ruining" breeds is incorrect. 2 Quote Link to post
