I don't know the law with hunting squirrels with dogs so mods feel free to edit this post

Started My squirrel hunting this year and havn't had that much luck with the guns as the leaves are still on the trees, i decided to let the terrier do the work as we were marking lots in stone walls, and fair play she did alright even though more got away than were caught this is down to me :icon_redface: but thers always another another time

hello i have a 5 week old border terrier I'm training at the moment (getting him to recognise his name and 'no' then ill move on to sit stay heel etc). Once i have trained him with the basic commands how do i go about training him to hunt squirrel, rabbit, rats etc? Do I use bummpers and dummies with scents on them and train him to fetch extra or is there other techniques i should use?

Please if you know of any article or book etc that will help me train my dog up it would be most appreciated. I'm looking to train him up so i can go out with my air rifle and shoot some vermin and have him fetch it or just have the dog hunt and kill the quarry.

thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't give diddly squat what your dog kills all I care about is dogs working and as far as grey squrrels are concerned they need annihilating be any means possible - However, the only legal quarry without restriction  is rat or rabbit, it is against the law to allow your dog to kill squirrel so make sure you look like your out for a stroll and not on a killing spree - What a load of :censored: .

I cant stand the things and shoot as many as I can, but I think the act covers the hunting of Squirrels too.

hello dawn b,that dog cage i had off you is still being used, much appreciated, going back to the squirrels i do alot of squirrel control but the act does cover squirrels as well, but i only use my dogs for marking purposes and retreiveing shot squirrels, they do chase a few if they see them when i am walking across woods on permission but that cannot be helped and i do my best of course to call them off squirrels if they make chase, lol,i am out on them next week so fingers crossed i will be having a few of the critters myself, keep hunting

Thats One of many laws that needs changing Surely Squirrels cause more damage to Brittish wildlife and trees than Rabbits :icon_eek:

Well we've a natural woodland plantation of just under six thousand trees and every tree rat that we see is hunted down

bollocks to the ban, its a total load of sh*t, mice are even protected under the hunting act, are you supposed to go down the police station and hand yourself in if your dog catches a mouse whilst on a ratting or rabbiting trip! theyd tell you to stop wasteing their time! grey squirrels need wiped out to save the reds so who cares what method is used to do so! :diablo:
