If there happy then it doesnt but think you will find that alot of people who have a few dogs but rarely go out are neverthat happywith there dogs, thats why they keep getting another in hope it be better but if they went out more and had less dogs the.n the dogs they got would be better an the owner might be really happy instead of just saying it 1 Quote Link to post

Gaz_1989 9,539
Forget 2 or 3 dogs if you only going out once a fortnight you will never have 1 good dog never mind 3 Okay for starters, as someone who gets less opportunity to get out lamping than others - I need 2 dogs. I work nights so when that night off work crops up - I AM GOING OUT. So I need 2 dogs to guarantee that. One could be laid up or in season etc. Time is precious. Secondly it is nobody's business but the man who feeds them how many dogs he keeps. Dogs ain't just a working tool to me. If I had 4 and they were all below average I would still be a happy man. They would put the odd bit in the freezer and I would enjoy their company. This ain't a competition who can keep the best dog and work it the most. It's a hobby which we do for enjoyment. 8 Quote Link to post

You're right there Gaz! The fact remains though, when a dog is young and still learning then taking it out often and only running it at the easier looking rabbits will give it more confidence and allow it to get a much better strike rate sorted out. I've hardly had my collie cross out lamping at all this winter, even though she's a much better lamper than my deer cross is. The young deer cross has learned a lot and progressed well because of this. Funnily enough, my collie cross is 4 years old, rising 5 and never took a fox. She always chased without striking. On one of her few outings this winter she chased a fox, had over by the neck on the second turn and killed it. I only let her chase it for the exercise. . Dunno what to make of that. Being a dog man isn't a title you get from not having a job and going lamping every night. I'm just a man with a dog. And a happy one. You crack on. 3 Quote Link to post
