foxbolter 447
U got to work dogs in the country u got and more so if u doing terrier work with hounds and rock dogs got to be good dogs their work is far more harder than earth work once terriers can work rocks in my eyes they are the true warriers of the fox terrier world and u could get poddle to dig a fox in a earth Quote Link to post
bunny tickler 876
how can you dig through the rocks seen on here, not a loaded question, just looks impossible task,we have a mate with a cur of a bitch, does 30 -45 minutes, was thinking of checking just how bad or good the spots i photographed might be,.dont know if we'll do it or not but i'll leave it up to the bloke that owns te dog. if a rock moves a little its a sure sign you can get it out , Quote Link to post
oohmydog 82
Is there anybody had there dog have to be dug out because of the collar being caught up in a rock pile ? Once we moved some stone and found that Charlie had a full earth dug in to the bank which the pile had been tipped it held foxes for years Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Brilliant thread Never did rocks, but huge straw stacks of big square bales could be pretty nerve wracking at times. Several times needed the fork lift to take the stack apart to find a stuck dog. 2 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
With all due respect ,bales are a far cry from rocks .At the very least its a wait until the farmer has finished milking to use the loader .We do bales here with never a hint of worry using the belman .I wouldnt be feeling the same in rock nor would those entering regularly i suspect .Not looking for argument ,just observation. 5 Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741
That's interesting regarding size because when the Fell types started coming into Ireland in the late 70s, early 80s most lads considered them too big and that included for badger digging. Yet these terriers coming in were from dogs worked in rock. But I have to agree with what I've seen of terriers working rock is that a fine, medium size is best. A friend has a bitch that came from a Welsh pack who was bred to work in flint and IMO she's quiet small. The Fell types that were bred for rocks would have been useless at work,if they were that big.Around that time the biggest influence on Fells/Lakeys was the decline into breeding for the shows and the financial reward, they went from being leggy, wiry grafters,to heavy cobby show winners,on the whole. I can remember going to actually buy a pup from a man in the early 80s and when he showed me the parents i was gobsmacked, thewy were like black wheatens,no way on earth would they get to fox and would even struggle with badger back then. This man was blowing up his dogs by saying that nothing would get passed them,i said im not surprised, lol needless to say i did'nt purchase the pup. Grunter123 1,109
I would say it depends on the size of the bail stacks, up here round us on these pig spots bed and breakfast most lads will not work them as they are to big,but I work fells in rocks, cliffs quarry's and massive bail stacks with good results, don't get me wrong I have lost dogs in them. I have try other types nuttals and the like there no good for this type of work . Quote Link to post
