Fox Having A Bad Day

Recommended Posts

We went out for a couple of hours on a golf course this evening and got 3 foxes. The last one I shot was just staring at us out of some undergrowth. We manoeuvred into a better position for a shot and it didn't run off. It was half-laying, half crawling along.

I administered a special walshie pill and when we went to pick it up, it's front leg was broken and it had a cleanly shaved square patch on its neck where it had obviously had recent surgery. It must have been very recent as the fur hadn't started to grow back.

The only thing I can think that would explain all this is it had been hurt, treated at a vets, released, then probably run over again tonight, then shot.

That's a bad day by anyone's standards, but I felt better when I realised it must have been in a lot of pain and isn't any more.

I wonder how many so called rescues and animal charities dump foxes without any thought as to where their home territory was? They have an awful lot of suffering to answer for.

wonder how many dumped foxes for want of a better word last any length of time when abandoned in this way, makes you think.

I doubt many do. I know my dogs have found them, usually in batches, and it has been very obvious that they are not on their home territory and that they have no idea where to run to: when you find a seemingly healthy fox laid up in a bramble right beside a well used path you just know it has been dumped. Especially if you get to see its teeth: the numbers of foxes I've found with missing or very worn down teeth, and very fat as well ... you know they wouldn't have been in good condition if they'd had to catch their own food.
