rabbit demon 302
Iv a wee terrier cross that Im breaking to the ferrets for a second ferreting dog. He was ok with the ferrets till my hob and jill decided to ambush him. The hob shot from one side of the garden and gave him a few good bites then my jill decided she wanted to get in on it too by locking on to his back leg, both giving the old head shake when they were biting leaving my poor wee dog quite shook up and now he is very wary of them all. I had to lift him up as the two wee gits were really goin for it. Has anyone else had this happen?.. All my ferrets get on with my other lurcher they play together except when their working when there will be the odd nip from my hob for getting too close but nothing like with the other dog. Gaj1612 99
I thought the best way to do it was one dog and one ferret? Easier to keep an eye on things Quote Link to post
rabbit demon 302
Hes only been around the other two ferrets since but as you said slip he runs to the back door when i open the hutch but that could go the other way in a second and he could give them a good shake. Was too used to them being fine with the other dog coming out while I was cleaning them out and not having mayhem break out lol. Il go back to basics by bringing my wee jill in an around him to get him used to them again. Id be new to working dogs alongside ferrets so still learning. Quote Link to post
slip lead 862
Get a large tray and add watered down milk and let them both drink together on opposite sides, but one ferret at a time. Good luck. Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,500
I'd rather a dog avoid them than try and mess with them especially a terrier. Quote Link to post
bugg 84
Let them spend more time seeing each other through the bars, strange why they dont like one dog but ok with the other, Quote Link to post
tsteve9999 456
My old dog is 60 odd pounds and not scared of owt in the field but he won't go near the ferrets unless we're out rabbiting. They've all nipped him over the years at one time or another playing about and it's given him a healthy respect for them. Better I think than the dog treating them as mates and playing about with them. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
I found the close contact part of the introduction best done in the field , worked a treat took a couple of outings , that way all party's were focused on work and not each other and the dog can move freely away from any ferrets , hope this helps , Quote Link to post
rabbit demon 302
Both my ferrets and lurcher get on with the job when we go out ferreting they dont be playing then and the hob has given her a sore nip for getting too close Which sorted her messing about when out. They are serious now when working together. A nice wee team. My plan was to take the pup next time I go out, least he knows to stay away from them and let them do their job and he learn to do his. Thanks for the advice lads. Quote Link to post
Mick C. 229
Last season a rabbit hit the net and the dog ran up to it .The ferret followed the rabbit out and latched onto the side of the dogs jowl. It was hanging there up to its gums. The dog never yelped or made an attempt to remove the ferret. He just looked at me with a very sad expression. I went over to him and I had to choke the ferret off. I thought it very respectful he knew that ferret was a valued member of the team 1 Quote Link to post
