How Long Do I Have To Wait?

Recommended Posts

A couple of years ago, I was prescribed antidepressants to treat depression. I am still on them now, however I am almost to the point where I can slowly begin getting off of them. I haven't been formally diagnosed with anything due to my age (early twenties) and I understand the Police don't like giving tickets to people with a mental illness history. How long do I have to wait before I could be considered for a Firearms Certificate? My local force is Hampshire Constabulary.

Ultimately, there is no time limit on how long you should wait. There's no statutory time frame.

The police will ask you about such conditions and you need to be open and honest about them otherwise it would be an instant fail as your integrity would be called into question.

They will also more than likely speak to your Doctor and ask him for his comments.

The police will be cautious in issuing certificates to someone with mental health issues, as you would no doubt expect, but it is not impossible.

Personally, I would get yourself sorted first without thinking about applying until you're good and ready. If you apply and are refused on the grounds of your past issues then that bad news may set you back even further so to speak.

A friend of mine has just been called in for a interview as they found out he has been prescribed anti depressants they were actually for treatment post op for a heart attack so they let him keep his gun's. At the moment i wouldn't think you have much hope of getting a fac when you stop taking them and stay off them i still think it would be a couple of years before it would be worth applying.

Thanks guys.

I will certainly be honest with them - I'm a gun nut so deviances involving firearms annoys me immensely so I would do everything in my power to be above board, and I certainly won't try to cover anything up - I've seen the consequences of fibbing to the Police and I'd rather not be on the wrong side of them. I would also be interested in getting some stalking experience before applying for a stalking rifle.

Well you're not prohibited from using firearms, so you could easily book a few days stalking and just use the "Estate" rifle to actually shoot,

All such experience is going to stand you in better stead, as would perhaps shooting with air rifles along with joining a rifle club/clay shoot and using club guns,

Equally, if you have friends that shoot, there's nothing to stop you shooting in their company providing you comply with the conditions of their shotgun/firearm certificate and stay within sight and/or earshot of them.

Again, you can never have too much experience.

Hi Fella, i have been taking medication for anxiety for over 10 years and had no problem with renewal or initial grant, dont try to hide anything just tell them how it is !! As long as you dont have a criminal record or family issues you should be ok. Just remember there are millions of people taking some kind of medication for this illness just unfortunate we are among them..

Dont give up.

It is a shame that a few idiots who wanted their 15 minutes of fame in a merciless manner, caused the system to be so much harder for everyone else. They give people with mental health issues (genuine issues, not selfish moron syndrome) a very bad name, and they also give shooters a bad name.

Gun ownership should be a right, for protection of your own home against criminals and for sporting purposes - the very small minority are to blame for that not being the case in the UK, along with knee-jerk reactions from governments instead of dealing with the real problem.

gun ownership is a right you are intitled to if you pass the criteria for sporting purposes you won't get it for home protection and i wouldn't mention that again if I were you

I certainly wouldn't use one for home protection, as it's not lawful. I was merely saying that in my opinion, it should be. But that isn't why I'm a member on here. As I understand it's quite a controversial subject, I think it's best to leave it there.

Words, their use and the order they are said.............

Using a rifle/gun/knife/screwdriver/etc/etc is perfectly lawful for home protection in the appropriate circumstances.

But in this country your chances of getting a gun granted for that purpose is about Zero!
