fat man 4,741
If you aint green or new to the digging game then you should know how to get a terrier entered, especially once you've got your own permission,as said if its in the dog he will go himself without watching someone else's dog doing it 1st,also mind who you bring onto your permission as a lot could tag along with you just for the permission alone.like I've said mate I haven't dug for.around 17 years so not green but very rusty and as I've said also I've always seen me dad peg em and it worked for him so thought I'd try that no harm is there but if you had read the post you would of known all of this all my perm is farm land for rabbiting I used to run lurchers but mostly ferret now see lots of fox on the land used to run em Yes Lee i read your post,BUT you also said you used to dig back in your early 20s so you should know what your at and there was no harm meant in my post.Just walk the dog on your permissions when he is old enough to work and with a locater collar on and bring it to earths on the land and if foxy is home then if the dog wants in let him. downsouth 7,356
I think pegging pups out on digs is good experience, getting them used to the smells and sounds, aswell as getting used to seeing the shovel. Sounds daft but I've seen a few different young dogs that would work well and then shy away from the shovel once you broke through. Good luck with your pup.You wanna stop bashing them in the head when you break through mate. 2 Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Personally ,my pet hate is the dog that wants out when the light floods in ,has been the end of a few otherwise useful dogs . Quote Link to post
Rabbit Hunter 6,613
Wanting out is different to shying from the shovel. Dogs that want out are usually shit bags. 2 Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,324
i feel that peggin out youngsters tends to fire em up. i prefare them to enter cold on scent naturally like. This works with or without other terriers its handy to have an old hand to run through after a pup but thats just a bonus and not crucial jmo. 3 Quote Link to post

yorkshire 151
Glad you got sorted , no need to peg a dog on a dig , all it will do is bring unwanted attention . if your general nosey twat spies a chap or two digging and scratching about in a field he carries on not giving it a second thought , could be farmer clearing a drain ,dyke , planting a tree or burying his wife ... No one cares ... But have a terrier in view and Mr nosey parkers mind runs wild, as he go,s for the mobile ,dialing old bill who WILL descend on you from all sides and above ..lol.. I speak in experience not in jest.. JUST NOT WORTH IT . let a dog mark on a lead when on exercise , he will let you know when he,s ready not when he,s wound up . a dog that marks true on a lead is a great asset .. 2 Quote Link to post
