Advice On A Ferreting Dog

Recommended Posts

flacko never ever had a dog whimpering at hole and certanly not wanting one going down the hole like a terrier no good full stop

the idea to me dogs walk quitely round holes marks one ferret down rabbit out, cacthes or nets it and moves on no barking digging doing my head in ,

i want a dog the minute hees in feild hees rabbiting not playing and acting mad ,, another thing i like , a dog that follows the action round a set for the bolt quitely and controled , and marks roughly were the kill is if ferrets on one ,till i come over with bleeper , locator ,, i hardly speak to a dog from the minute we get in feild tillend of day unless its apat on head or geting to wound up , ,cant handle hyper dogs running about mad like terriers

always found a lurcher with Beddy in it, usually has a good nose, 3/4 Whippet 1/4 Bedlington, given a positive mark at three Months old. Has turned into a cracking marker, never tells lies.

My Westie like a day ferreting, canny nose on him. Not every choice but get him oot.   PUD

That is the lurcher mix that I breed, and favour...   Nice and nimble, quick and quiet around a warren...and just right for the hedgerow game...

I think we all want that dog fluff but in reality I have personally found it takes time for a pup to settle to the game, especially ferreting as patience is paramount and pups are sometimes lacking in that department jmo.

Not all terriers are hyperactive nutters either, got one here at 10 month old very steady and listens well. Maybe not the norm but had plenty of this type in my family down the years or all types of terrier xs atb

My ferriting partner has an eight month old kelpie greyhound whippet bred from a first cross kelpie greyhound put to a pure whippet.

He has just started bringing him out on our last 2 outings.

Both days have been freezing high on the dales and the dog never bothered.

We use longnets and the dog never once hit the nets jumping it like a seasoned dog.

Sound with the ferrets.

At the end of the second day you could see him listeneing and following the action underground.

I have been very impressed with this pup he never wonders and has made about 24 inch with a robust frame and superb feet a pleasure to be around.

I know what you saying fluff but we can't always get it perfect the 1st time or 2nd dogs learn with experience you can stop pups trying to get down hole but takes a trip or two out isn't that part of dogs apprenticeship and like I said a dog might give a bit of a whimper till it gets to know the game and I like much the same as you mark, wait and hold or catch if needed too atb Flacko ps I never mentioned dog going down hole in1st post.
