Guest SJM
Has anyone owned a 3/4 Grey 1/4 Collie that was bred from a collie/grey lurcher bitch to a greyhound dog? Im asking cos I bred a litter from my collie/grey dog to a grey bitch and the pup I kept had no stamina, he was very fast, lots of early pace and everything else about the wee dog was great, he hunted up, carried back, jumped well and was biddable, he just had nothing left to give after a couple of runs The only other genuine 3/4 greys I have seen have been Hancocks bred from grey bitch to collie/grey dog both were yappers, and the other one was linebred collie/grey dog to grey bitch and it was a yapper as well. A few mates have suggested I put a whippet/grey over my old bitch but I would be worried about them being too small, and possibly fine boned for up here, especially on the heather and moors. Im toying with the idea of putting a greyhound over my old bitch, but dont know whether its fair on her to put her through another litter just cos I dont want to look outside my own kennel for a genuine bred pup. Shes fit, healthy, hard worked, well proven and a good mother, but Im also worried that the progeny would be very fast but not have any wind, anyone got any experiences of a genuine 3/4 grey 1/4 collie cross (with nothing else added) they can share to either confirm or dispel my fears? Was I just unlucky? or do 3/4s not possess enough wind as a general rule? Im also going to do the 5/8 gre 3/8 collie cross at some point in the future, and Im doing it in reverse, ie 3/4 collie bitch to a gre dog to try and (hopefully) keep the stamina. Its all very well having speed but you need a bit of stamina to balance it out. Pics and stories of this cross would be great Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
If you find i decent 3/4 grey 1/4 dog with stamina why dont you put that over your bitch?? Would that not give you better stamina odds?? I fancied a 3/4 once but was thinking it may lack the wind.. Edited November 1, 2007 by Giro Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
I have thought of that but I want to limit the amount of "throwback" pups I would get out of a collie lurcher x collie lurcher mating. My bitch carries a long coat/giraffe legs gene as I have found when I bred her back to her sire, and in the most recent litter, I want to try and eliminate that with a hefty dose of pure sighthound Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
Just my thoughts SJM but if its only running dogs you want for the cross then I would go for a good sound line of coursing dog, a line that is predominantly greyhound heavy and free from large inputs of saluki over the years. For adding 'wind' to your dogs these should be just the ticket, plus good feet, hight and prey drive....... For me, these specialist runners would be the perfect outcross to most lurcher 1/2 crosses, dogs that are judged then bred on their killing ability. Good luck with whatever dog you use Quote Link to post
FLY 0
proven worker to proven worker and you cant go wrong,my current dog 3/8 collie (beardie/border) 5/8 grey is exceptionally fast and ive had a few collie crosses- 1/4 border 3/4 greyhounds that had bags of stamina but were as slow as some first crosses also front feet a bit suspect as identical foot injuries reapearing with almost identical bred litters. dont know yet as my 3/8 5/8 only 14 month and untested but hes as big or bigger (27") than some 3/4 breds and as fast or faster than the border 3/4 crosses av had in past and got great feet.
