joesutton 0
Hi guys Was just wondering what shotgun u would use for rabbits? I am hopfuly going to get my SGC and am just awaiting the home visit.. Should I be successful I will be getting a 12gauge over and under for clays.. Would it have to much punch for rabbits? Would a single barrel 20gauge be more suited? And also what ammo would u use? Many thanks Quote Link to post

mad4it 694
i use a 12g semi auto with clear pigeon 6 30g for rabbit, pigeon and crows. Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
A 12G over and under is the best alround solution for clays and game. 32g No:6 will take pretty much anything humanely other than fox and large high flying birds such as duck and geese. It's a great alround cartridge. Quote Link to post
hunter1 63
Winchester sx3 semi auto 32g no6 . Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,763
If I was using a gun wholly and solely for rabbits, it'd be a semi auto with 1/4 choke. But there is f**k all wrong with an over and under or side by side. Quote Link to post

joesutton 0
Awesome 12gauge it is then thanks for the responses let's just hope I get my certificate now haha Quote Link to post
comanche 2,990
One advantage of the 12 bore is that there are so many different loads available. If you find yourself shooting at short range-over ferrets or in cover perhaps- you can always use a light cartridge to minimise damage . Quote Link to post
joesutton 0
Yeah need to get myself some ferrets again.. thought I would ask as I didnt wanna destroy the rabbit as they are good eating haha Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
Hi guys Was just wondering what shotgun u would use for rabbits? I am hopfuly going to get my SGC and am just awaiting the home visit.. Should I be successful I will be getting a 12gauge over and under for clays.. Would it have to much punch for rabbits? Would a single barrel 20gauge be more suited? And also what ammo would u use? Many thanks :hmm: A 12g O/U is common for clays, but as regards punch that is more down to the cartridge. Many would use a 7.5 or 8, usually 30 or less for general clays. For skeet, a 21, 9 is not uncommon. Quarry work usually requires different cartridges and a 30/32 5 will work well for most rabbits, all be it noisy, which will possibly present other issues. Too much punch , well, if you use a heavy cartridge very close you will not have much bunny left to eat, but 12g is common(ish) for rabbit, and if it is particularly close and you want to eat it just aim off a bit, not too many face this problem very often though, especially after you have let go the first shot! Clay guns are very often used in the field and are perfectly capable on the whole, if a little heavy for prolonged use. Edited January 19, 2015 by Deker Quote Link to post
