Recommended Posts

Just been scanning through the net and come across a dog called rat terrier, so I googled it and it is an actual type of terrier! First I've heard of it, do any of you know much about them or even work them? They not the best looking of terriers but looks aren't everything, wonder if they are used much?

Rat terriers are a breed in America. They were originally bred to be a varmit dog on farms and come in 3 sizes , anywhere from 10 to 30lbs MOL. Their appearance is similar to a Russell......There are some that are bred and are used hunting , but, most are only pet or show quality.....Do a google search, you will find many Rat Terriers.

I recall when I was young I would stay for a week or so at my uncles dairy farm. Sport was the rat terrier for the farm , and, he was quite a dog. He weighted about 12lbs and was everything a young boy could ask for.....The dog was always on the job no matter what was going on......The cows would be milked each morning and the milk put in 10 gallon cans and loaded to go to the creamery 3 miles away. The rat terrier would follow the milk truck despite having only 3 legs, losing one leg to a hay mower. By the time last milk can was unloaded onto the loading dock at the creamery, Sport would arrive......Sport then raced after the milk truck on the way back to the farm, arriving only a few minutes after the truck did....The dog did this each day til he got too old to continue.....Sport was also a great ratter and all around varmit dog , and great companion.
