swg dave 334
A few years ago me and a friend had been out on permission with the air rifles for a few rabbits, and we had to pass this land on the way to my permission, that was heaving with rabbits, we use to say that we should find out who owns this land, but as you do, you keep putting it off. So one day i said to my mate right lets find who owns this land, knocked a cottage at top of lane and found out who the landowner was.So i pull up to the electric gates pushed intercom, explained i was seeking permission for some ferreting,he invited us in to the front of big house on drive and we got chatting. I explained that i shoot on other land near to his farm and ferret, did not mention lamping with dogs as i wanted to get my foot in the door. Any way after him taking my name and contact details he said jump in the 4x4 ile drive you round the farm and show you the hotspots, feck me im in, anyway was ferreting his ground and bagging up some nice rabbits. He eventually let us start using air rifles which was proving very successful, but there was parts of his ground where lamping with dogs would have been more appropriate, up to now he said he was pleased with our progress, so i thought strike while the irons hot and asked if we could lamp using our dogs, being that he had let us lamp with air rifles, explaining the dogs could make an impact in the fields where the really thick hedgerows were, and also that our dogs had been used round livestock and knew their game. I could not believe his response i dont want bloody dogs running all over my farm, people will be phoning the police seeing lamps shining of a night, (what i thought) being we have already lamped with air rifles anyway, ok i said no problem. Next day get a text message saying that his ok for the rabbits at the moment,, DIRTY MOTHERS C**T,, we done a very good job for this man as well, THE UNGRATEFUL C**T. Strange how he changed at the mention of dogs, i could not believe it, up to then he had been nice as pie. Has any body else ever had this problem ? Quote Link to post

rodp 316
Unfortunately a lot of farmers associate lurchers with travellers, and some (most?) have had bad experiences with SOME travellers. It doesn't take many bad apples to ruin the barrel full and the travellers that nick quads, metal gates and anything else around ruin it for everyone. We deal with a few travellers, they come to the factory for everything from bowtop trailer canvas tops to scrap metal. We bought one of our works vans off a traveller, some are as good as gold and genuine blokes. But as I said earlier, some are downright rogues and they're the ones that get all a bad name. just the way it is. Shame really. Quote Link to post

rodp 316
The apple farmer I know was moaning he'd lost money on apples last yr.not worth picking he said.I replayed how come u just planted 4o,ooo more trees then. Probably because he gets paid to let them drop on the floor and paid a bit more to plant new trees, and let those apples drop on the floor ?? What beats me is although some farmers moan about no money, when you suggest they sell the farm and get a job they ignore you. Had a bloke (customer) who wanted some big covers for his brother in Scotland. His brother lived on the family farm which, according to my customer, made no money at all. He kept trying to get the price of these covers down by saying the farm made nothing and his brother had to go out to work at the local power station to make ends meet. When I said why doesn't he just sell the farm, buy a house and carry on at work he said "no way, can't sell the land". Some want it all ways, plead poverty, keep the land for themselves and get others to support them ??? he didn't get his covers off me, he can go spin on it Quote Link to post
bird 9,863
ive lost ground ,through no fault of my own, had acres not a lot but get few runs on it, was always told by owner that if go lamping bell him , which I did . Well was getting night sorted out, so phone him , he said w\s you on the other night, I said no as I told him I phone 1st, before I go on . He said had few other landowners who live by moaning , about lamp al over the place, so said its better if don't come on any more , as i don't want any lamping on or by my place. Well what twat of human being I done no wrong but lost ground for feck all. But I learned big lesson that day say feck all and just go on, you may as well bcause if you don't , somebody else will. the days of me knocking doors are over, ok if bump into somebody in a pub or etc. meaning nothing planed might drop it out in chat, but that's it. if you got ground great look after it, but some people are very fickle like as above , you never know whats around the corner .?
