Fix A Chest Freezer

Recommended Posts

Sounds like the compressor is goosed.

You can buy a replacement and re plumb. I'm guessing you can get micro bore compression fittings? If not then its a solder job. I haven't a clue about re pressurising it.

A replacement could set you back £80 plus re gassing.

It could also be the thermostat. That would be a cheaper fix.

Is the compressor running hot?

Get a second hand one and ditch your knackered one out for the scrap men.

So they can strip out the broken compressor. Strip off the metal and fly tip a naked insulated box at some beauty spot

I'm no expert, but, does it get cold, really cold? I think if not it's more than likely leaked the gas out. If it hums then probably motor / compressor is OK (note "probably")

I would think not worth bothering with, take it to the tip, they have a disposal point for them. If you put it out the front for scrapmen they'll take the good bits and leave you the rest.

Chest freezers are £50 also, is your garage really cold...freezers need a temperature difference to work......is there condensation on the outside of the freezer....?

I didn't know that, mine in utility room, that quite cold, say if you got couple cans there the lager would be reasonably cold in that place, would you say that room cold enough then . my freezer working ok so must be ok in that room .?

I think you need a dual thermostat freezer to work in cold places, this comes up a lot on my fishing forums, as the guys keep there bait in a freezer in the garage or shed, I'm not sure what temperature difference you need, you could google the make and model, and check its minimum working temperature

Thx lads I knew about if it got real cold they could pack in but ive had it in the garage for 4 years and it's been perfect and it was second hand when I bought it so it's not really a new but the dam thing is 300 litre chest freezer so it's handy too have if you've got something big or a lot of small things that's needing frozen

Two possible causes; thermostat or compressor knackered. If it's the 'stat, easy and cheap to replace. If it's the comp, then bin it and by a new one. It's not even worth buying a second hand one these days, new ones are cheap enough. Five years sounds about right for the life span of white goods these days.

Ive had two in the garage for 16 years and one in the shed for 5 years there old but they work fine as there only for rabbits and dog food. I would bin it and pick up another one off gumtree etc as said probably cheaper than getting it fixed
