stevo79 569
Hi everyone, I've been training my now 16 week old beddy whippet. He's doing really well at the sit stay command and was really good at retrieving an old pair of sock rolled up. But the last couple of days he's been plying up and just running straight past me Any tips would be much appreciated Thanks Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,089
Can you not do it somewhere the dog will not get passed you Or Make It A Bit Of Tug Our WITH THE Pup Make It Keen To BRING It To You FOR A Carry on Quote Link to post
Dewclaw69 484
as NL said try to do this somewhere the pup cannot get past you or the game may start to consist of the you chasing the pup around. either way you have to get the pup to want to come back to you. mine did the same sort of thing and you just have to get the pup to focus on you. no retrieve-game stops. all easier said than done though. good luck with it. 1 Quote Link to post
slip lead 862
Make it more exciting, pretend to throw it,high, low, left and right but not every time, also have a tug every now and again (it doesn't make them hard mouthed) if you can make him very keen for his toys, it makes all the sit, stay, fetch and find training so much quicker and easier. Also when he starts playing up STOP even better just before he starts. Good luck Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
I tend to sit on the dogs bed or.at kennel door coz.every pup I've had has taken toys to their bed and as been said play tug of war or make a flirt pole then when the pup has the rag/dummy in it's mouth it's connected to you Quote Link to post
stevo79 569
So how many retrieves would you do with him??? Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
I would also try lettin him keep the toy occasionally I have found they are more willing to return if you just give them a good fuss sometimes an dot take the toy. I personally wild play tug but everyone is different , not purely because of the hard mouth issue but easentially you are encouraging the dog to compete for items which I don't think helps in the long run. Sounds like his is just bored of tevhame at that point little an often helps jmo atb Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Personally i would get his recall 110% first. Until that moment you are building on top of weak foundations. Also I would only do retrieves twice a week at the very most. That's if you want the retrieve to be a 'game'. Myself, I would rather it be a habit. Dog's get bored of games. But that's JMO.....Good luck. .JD 1 Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
The best place to teach a dog to retrieve is a narrow alleyway, that way the dog has to come to you. To start off no more than two retrieves a day. Stepping up slowly as the dog gets older. Always finish the training session on a good note, even if it means cutting it short. Say the pup will sit, then end the session with a sit or anything that it is good at. TC Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Given the right training any dog can be taught to retrieve. TC Edited January 15, 2015 by tiercel 1 Quote Link to post
