Have been reading as a guest for a few months but just signed up because I'm looking for some advice from some one who may have practical knowledge. I probably shouldn't have put it on the terrier section, regarding sensible advise, but terriers are where I'm from and where I am I used to keep dogs that I worked, and could justify every aspect of that. Now I have one dog. A Russell type. He lives inside and does not get much work. I would like to get another terrier, that may also be wasted as a working dog, to keep him 'company' . So most people on here will not agree with this. But I will ask my question. Can we now keep an uncastrated dog with an intact bitch without the hassle that we used to have ? Can we give a dog or a bitch injections to get them to live together without pups ? I remember a little bit about this with track dogs but this was in 1980's and only regarding bitches. I have tried to pick the brains of the Vets my area. All young girls. Most of them not really knowing much about dogs. All of them just recommend getting my dog castrated and going to a rescue centre for a bitch that has already been made operated on Cheers . I used to be of the opinion that I wouldn't keep a dog or bitch the isn't worth breeding from. However this was in the past when the dogs had a chance to prove themselves. The terrier I have at present hasn't really had that chance. He's done a little bit but no where near enough to make a proper judgement. So castration should not be a problem, but it still goes against the grain to render a relatively young dog incapable of passing on the genes. I'm hoping the availability of work situation may change. Kennelling the present dog and doing the same with the new bitch is obviously an option. I kept dogs outdoors in the past. But these were terriers that a full working life, which the present and possible new bitch may not have. It's all about trying to give the best quality of life that I can to the dogs. An old friend has put me onto a proper old school vet. I will pay a visit and hopefully get an honest opinion from her regarding the viability of these sorts of injections and any possible detrimental effects that long term use may have on the dogs.
