Born Hunter 17,798
So still going with the fish then? FFS Now Mr landowner, rent a JCB and dig my duck flighting pond out! Nothing extravagant, say 30m diameter with an island and feed regular with barley. Give me a shout when you have a decent number coming in. NEWKID 27,379
Keep the Eels mate, good for clearing any dead fish etc, keep the water clean. As long as there aren't thousands of bootlaces
walshie 2,804
As you know Kev, being the expert angler I am, if I don't catch anything, there's nothing to catch.
NEWKID 27,379
Those fish won't know what's hit them once you flex your angling skills lol.
Truther 1,579
Depends on location Walshie, and permission to sell tickets/run matches, if its within decent travelling distance of a good few match clubs, and you want to sell tickets most of the year? one word..........Ide............the boys round here who want a match like the ponds with plenty of Ide, not such a good idea to mix trout and coarse, trout will decimate the coarse, Ide mix well with other coarse species even if they outnumber them
twobob 1,497
Just think about the growth of the fish, too many fish will stunt the growth. A 1lb roach or Rudd in a farm pond is a good fish But tench and bream could go 7lb+ in a water like that if there is good natural food. Put a good head in to start with but you may need to net it in 5 years time to keep on top of it. That deep water should make it fishable all year and if you get some decent sized roach in there the winter fishing could be good. Tench and crucians in the summer on the waggler.... Get the breakfast on trish I'm on my way lol walshie ask your lass if i can have fryed bread aswell as toast seriously if you want to spend your weekends fishing or picking litter up think about it
Wildling 520
I intend to mate. Might get rid of the eels at least. Don't get rid of the eels! They are a great fish to catch on light tackle and are also endangered these days due to commercialisation of course fishing.
neil cooney 10,416
Have to agree, leave the eels. They need a helping hand nowadays and small waters like that can often hold big specimens. A small water like that IMO three species would be loads. Also another question but here in Ireland we don't go for the modern fancy coloured species like Orf and Goldfish. Surely these brightly coloured fish help the predators leading to more predation ? toby63 1,236
you could put some grass carp in as well
perthshire keeper 1,239
It might be just that they stopped getting bites on the fly and it could be a good pit full of tench and crucians. Get down there with some maggots and a bread punch. failing that ime a dab hand at sein netting
danw 1,748
Why not open a water park like this one
Poacherspocket 189
As mentioned Ide are a brilliant fish to catch i had a day on a local pond similar in size fishing a 2foot length of line with a hook on the end on the pole firing maggots over and watching the Ide pull the elastic out. Also had a few chub and plenty of rudd with the same method. If it was my pond id stock it with course fish but dont over do it. Stick a bit of everything in and half the fun will be not knowing whats next.
fourlurchers 279
if you stock a small head of say 50 wild brownies at half lb each then maybe 100 tench of similar size , a couple of hundred 6 in roach or rudd and a hand full of perch and maybe a few bream or chubb even crucians, you will have fun watching your fishery grow , a lot will depend on the ph of water and natural food available and your natural stock , but the trout will not affect your stock as you will keep a few here and there I take it , try to not buy fish from bad source as you may or may not bring in a problem unless you isolate and treat your new stock you will be ok , in the past I worked in aquaculture and have stocked trout of triploid / male female, wild browns landlocked salmon , grayling , pike, chubb , crucians, carp rudd etc in a number of waters and raised koi and fancy fish have made some bad stocks in the past most were with carp at the detriment of the naitive tench and rudd populations , check your water for natural life and stock according but most of all enjoy and keep it for your pleasure and lesuire
