Saluki246 1,053
Leaving food .kids and dogs alone is a no no.simple as that. . Awkward one really, whilst I was in the bath my daughter said dad the dogs got the leg of lamb! But as she went to get it off her the dog took at her, now I don't know whether to let this go or what, the pups only 16 weeks old but about 20 tts already so will be even more dodgy when fully grown Is this just puppy behaviour or shall I take it for a walk with the 12 bore and a spade? Dog cost me 400 with jabs and fuel to pick her up, What would you do? one i wouldnt leave food where dog can get it,two i wouldnt leave a seven year old alone with any dog,and three, never a combination of first two, learn from this, atb mc Get it in a kennel and feed it in there job done. Dogs should only be in a house,,,when kids have left home....or at least grown up... Let's not forget these dogs we own,,are stone wall killing machines,,,your avrage lurcher is 50 lb of muscle and teeth,,,wich if it wanted could kill a child proberbly double that weight Dogs should only be in a house,,,when kids have left home....or at least grown up... Let's not forget these dogs we own,,are stone wall killing machines,,,your avrage lurcher is 50 lb of muscle and teeth,,,wich if it wanted could kill a child proberbly double that weight deff mate , why why they have feckin dogs in the house for god knows , put the thing outside in its own kennel+ run away from kids, then you not got to(start) these probs in the 1st place. there not little humans there animals , that got long hair, stink, 4 legs, and as tomo said a set of teeth + strong jaw to crunch big bones . any dog even little 12lb jack would hurt a child never mind a 50-60 lb lurcher No doubts about it,..you have to vigilant, where dogs and chavies are concerned,..or the child might have to pay a terrible price.. One of our neighbours is a smart looking gal,..but she ain't too keen on jukels.. When you look closely at her face,..there is a definite scar on her cheek... This was done by a terrier when she was a young girl,..she has never forgotten it... However,..from a different angle,..one should always bear in mind the fact,..that dogs ain't humans,..and to treat them as such is foolish. A 10 week old canine, does not regard a young child as a human,.in its eyes it is simply another whelp to be bullied or obeyed,..whatever is appropriate... Dogs will always snatch back chunks of meat and bones,...this is what they do,..it is no indicator that the lurcher is destined, to become a vicious or dominant animal... SO,..it pays to keep calm,.not read too much into the situation,..but remain cautious... Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
I don't think there is anything wrong with rearing kids and pups in the house together PROVIDING that both learn, understand and obey the rules. I was brought up with dogs in the house, and one of the first things I learned was that the dog was not MY dog, but my father's gun dog. He was also a family pet, but I had no right to tell the dog off, or tell it what to do: this was when I was very young indeed. I also remember my dad teaching me how to treat the dogs properly as I got older and then learning how to make them sit, lie down, stay etc. but they were never my toys to play with like an idiot. I learned to respect them and they respected me as belonging to their master. Countless kids have been happily brought up around dogs in the home, but it seems only in the last 20-30 years or so that we see so much more of dogs biting kids, and I blame the parents for not bringing up both kids and dogs correctly. Ignorance is the biggest problem, not understanding how a dog works and not teaching it the rules. All young things need rules of life to live by and this doesn't seem to happen so much any more these days. 4 Quote Link to post
Casso 1,261
Sky cat, You may disagree with hand feeding with kids in the home but if you havent done it or seen the results don't knock it, It gives a context and an association, I think your missing the point , food doesn't become an ISSUE, you throw down a bowl and step back , then your making food important , your creating space , a zone to let the pup behave instinctively, I have feed pups in this manner with young chaps around the place for as long as I can remember, I would be more worried about a child putting it's hand down to a dog chewing on the floor if it believes the floor is its space and has been fed there from day one Quote Link to post
slip lead 862
Some very good points on this thread, and you can tell the people that have been reared around dogs lol. The most important thing is that they get the results the individual family won't, far to many kids are getting savaged/killed. Never once had an adult dog show me aggression, even when cleaning them up after a bad knock or tear. But if a dog you own bites, its you, who has failed the dog as well as the victim. Also remember, the biggest confident pup most people wont, has for the last 7 weeks been dominating his siblins and now has to adapt to a different higharacarky 1 Quote Link to post
