janine 53
I'm getting my first working ferrets tomorrow two Jills, after going out ferretting with my friend and really liking it. My question is they are going to come into season and I don't really want to be breeding from them otherwise I might end up overrun with ferrets, I've rung my vet who doesn't really deal with a lot of ferrets and to have a vasectomy on a hob it's £235 which is quite a lot of money I think!! the implant on the Jill is £228 and the to be spayed £88 but doesn't recommended that. What do people do? Quote Link to post
Gaj1612 99
either find a vet that will give a jill jab to take it out of season (although they can come back into season) or just keep the cage clean untill they come out. why doesnt he recommend it getting spayed? seems strange Quote Link to post
janine 53
Said with spaying it can effect the adrenal glands and because they don't deal with a lot of ferrets the injection on the Jill would cost £300 because I would have to buy the whole bottle does anybody know a vet that deals with ferrets in West Yorkshire? johnrthrfrd 223
Cost me 60 quid for a hob snipped. And last time had 2 gills jabbed 15 quid each 1 Quote Link to post
Gaj1612 99
thats steep haha. best bet is to just phone around all your local vets, where does your mate take his? Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
As Gaj said, seperate the hob and keep the jills meticulously clean, done this for over 20yrs and never had a problem The only time I lost a jill was the year I put a vasectomised hob over them 3 Quote Link to post
janine 53
thats steep haha. best bet is to just phone around all your local vets, where does your mate take his? Thats what I was thinking, my mate breeds from his, he said to ask on here if anybody had a vasectomised male on here! which I just thought would be easier to sort myself than to have to rely on other people Cost me 60 quid for a hob snipped. And last time had 2 gills jabbed 15 quid each I need to be coming to your vets that really good, will have to ring round, but like I said if anybody knows any in West Yorkshire Quote Link to post
david jones 97
What a rip off £235 that vet is quoted you to have a hob vesectomised that small opp should be no more than £100 for a vet who knows what he's doing,to do. And that price I believe is top end quoted. In my opinion I would get a hob and have him vesectomised buy a vet who knows what he's doing and doesn't pluck figures out of the air like the one who' s quoted you those extreme figures. Should be less agro in the long run keep going to the vet for Jill jabs 1 Quote Link to post
Chris the bass 7
Call around to all Animal rescue around your way and if they have a hob there it will be sniped get that for then most rescue places snip or spayed ferrets before rehoming to stop people breeding loads of them mate Quote Link to post
