springer spanielleg problem

Recommended Posts

i wonder if anyone can help with advice.my friend has a springer the bitch broke her back leg at the knee ball joint 5 mths ago however she is often quite lame and picks her leg up and she seems to have less muscle in the damaged leg for obvious reasons. i know she is kept as mainly a pet so doesnt get the same sort of excercise that she should but any advice towards helping him building the leg up and any set pattern he should take with the bitch ie walking on the tarmac on the lead, diet anything that can help him myself i am not to impressed with the leg and the op cost him a grand or so i dont think its a great job the vet done however i have never had spaniels or come across this type of injury before so maybe one for the spaniel boys thanks in advance.

the best way i would reccomend would be swimming ,wrong time of year now unless you can find a hydrotherpy pool where the dog will be forced to swim tethered to a bar against a jet. I certainly would not be letting the dog free run ..gentle excercise on grass lead on tarmac no running on hard ground will just aggreviate the leg.If your near a beach the sand water will be a better surface for the dogs leg. When the weather improves water will support the weight of the dog and the muscles and ligament will be forced to stretch and work.. Little and often would be the best course for an improvement, and try to keep an eye on the weight of the dog..Also mackrel in oil .pilchards in oil c/w omega 3
