Nobby8126 96
Well guys I'm chopping in my van for a 4x4, looking at a disco at the mo as fairly cheap fairly economical and can still do school run. Any opinions on a decent off roader that won't break the bank. Would love an old army rover but not many about in my price range. Only thing I'm really looking for is 35 mpg or over. Oh and a big enough boot for my stove got to have my bacon sarnie. Quote Link to post
bumpy22 414
any 4x4 doing over 25 mpg is good I am afraid mate Quote Link to post

Rake aboot 4,936
Almost anything but a landrover unless you are having an affair with a spanner saleswoman. Grand Vitara 2 ltr diesel . If you can find one. Quite amazing motors actually. In fact you`d be better off with a petrol Vitara as a Landy. OR an L200 crewcab like mines. Superb motor, 1 Quote Link to post
Jax13 251
as said, unless you drive like a nun you would be lucky to push 25 / 28mpg from a disco. there are a couple of mods (up the boost & fueling, egr bypass etc.) that will make the engine rev and work more freely so you don't need to push it as hard to get the same level of performance. my old one would do a shave over 30mpg on a run but short sub 5 mile journeys probably averaged 26ish. on the other hand, most of the 200 & 300 engined ones are now 'dissolving' underneath so be very careful of inner arches, sills, seatbelt mount points, boot floor, chassis, body mounts etc. regardless of how good the body looks. i've no real experience of them personally but the fourtrack has a pretty good reputation as do the terrano 2's as a soft roader that can do a decent shift on easyish off road stuff. freelanders are good too, assuming you can get a problem free one. some late 90's / early 00's td4's aren't bad (the closer to freelander 2 age the better) most pickups will do the 25 / 28 mpg mark with the exception of the isuzu. they are usually a lot bettter (the new dmax versions are really good on fuel) essentially, you will be struggling to pass 30mpg in anything so choose the one with the fewest issues in life for the age you are looking at. Nobby8126 96
Nissan navara does 33mpg according to spec....going to look at an outlaw later would you recommend them. Quote Link to post
Jax13 251
If it's the last shape navara be very careful. The engines were extremely prone to crank / bearing issues. There was a firm doing fixes for them and a lot got sorted. Search navara or 4x4 forums for what to look out for. Newer ones can have issues too. My neighbours new shape one seized it's engine at -12 degrees (dealer serviced a month beforehand) and Nissan wouldn't entertain replacing the motor under warranty. Quote Link to post

Joe1888 672
am still new to 4x4s so take what i say with a pinch of salt had a old 2.4 disco 200 tdi for a few months, was abit rough, got were it needed to and wasnt to bad on fuel, was able to run on it a veg oil/diesel mix in the warmer weather. other half hated driving it though, didnt enjoy the gear changes and struggled to reach pedals.... replaced it with a old 2.8 shogun glx, shes alot happier with it, reckons its easier to drive, not a old bone shaker! if am honest it does drive better, plenty of space and still gets where i need to offroad and alot better for day to day driving, Edited January 10, 2015 by Joe1888 Quote Link to post
Nobby8126 96
Pretty sure I know what's coming but I'm going to look at a tata Safari on Thursday. 7 seats, big enough and good off road by all accounts. Best of all its half the price of more mainstream in the same category, lower mileage and 5 years younger. Guessing parts will be an issue but the reviews have either been really good on them or really shite, let's hope I can get a good one. Quote Link to post
stevo79 569
Really hard to get pars for as I'm led to believe tarta have gone under! And what trucks are left have gone to africa ... Wouldn't waste you money Quote Link to post
