patterdale moocher 10
out hunting with the terriers yesterday when my bitch ripped her stomach open. The bitch squeezed under a sheep wire fence and ripped one of her rear teats off and left it dangling. When i got home 2 hours later it was bleeding quite bad so i went to the vets where i was told it needed stitching but the vet could not do it until the morning so i was advised that there was a 24hr animal hospital locally and they could do it that night after the vet made a phone call to them i was qouted between £200 + £350. I made a dash up to the hospital to see if i could get a discount. When i seen this vet he said yes it needs stitching up tonight and he could do it for between £200 + £350 so i said i could not afford this much money i just wanted the best for the dog. The vet asked me how much i could afford so i said i could get £100 tonight and he said no take the dog and come back with £200 if i wanted it doing. I then said if he could do it for £200 i would pay on the card to which he said yes. I left the dog with him and he said he would call me in a few hours when she comes round as to keep the price down (no overnight stay). The vet called me at 12.30am to say she was ready so i dashed up there to get her and the bill was now £239.46 so i said you said you would do it for £200 and he said this was the cheapest he could get the bill down to. Bitch is fine today she will be off for about 2 weeks. HATE BEING RIPPED OF BY VETS Quote Link to post

monksie 0
Not many of them in it for the sake of the animals anymore, just the money. At least the bitch is ok. Quote Link to post
tortoise 0
Thank goodness wee bitch is ok, but start checking out for a genuine vet looking out for you and yourdog, asking you to come back is scandalous. Please check out a book called The Complete Herbal Handbook for Dogs by Juliette Baraclii Levy, available for under 16 euro on easons.ie, ..... A LIFESAVER in many ways, would certainly teach many vets someting been using it for 3 yrs , gave a lend to local vet too, it has changed a lot of things for us, most of all quality of first aid treatment for working dogs. That bitch basically needed fancy stitching and a feed of antibiotics, £239 is sickening, sympathies. Pm me if you need further help Quote Link to post
Guest little lurcher
not a dog i know, but my horse suffers from a re occuring eye problem , simply solved at start of pro with optrex infected eye or the cream equivilant, he is on loan to a mate of mine and is authorised to request repeat scripts for the same prob , easy so far yes? ring up at time for a repeat, i hasten to add which is sent through the post tosave a vet visit too , try £169!!!!!!!!!!! for a tube of cream!!!! this tue costs 71p to produce and due to laws etc governing prices in pharmcueticals (sp) has to be sold at more than £4.95, but how much profit is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i no longer use the vets for the cream , i simply go to boots!!! higgins 75
Sorry to hear about your expense, here's my cheap tale. I actually hate going to the vets for any reason unless it's quite serious, your going to laugh now,i opted to see the vet because my terrier has had a niggling foot injury whereby he kept biting and licking his feet,i thought i can't be having this he's obviously in some discomfort here,on examination i worked out that his back toe nail was slightly longer than the others and at an angle compared to the others,so i decided to take him to the vets as i couldn't be bothered with a DIY job as i have started a new job and i have two other shifts to get accustomed to. So i takes him to the vets, she told me the toe nail needs pulling out, muzzles the dog in case he bites me, then explains everything on a board on a wall, tells me all the complications that may arise, advises me on the tablets he may need and then shoos me out!I said to her'i could've done that myself' to which she replied 'yes, you could have done that yourself ', but i tell you what there was no messin' with this one, anyway i was expexting a twenty five to 40 pound bill for this job including the tablets(must show how long since i visited a vet for anything other than the said terrier's vaccs),so off we go to the cashpoint and what a surprise the bill came to £16.36 which i still thought was expensive for something i could do myself, but i suppose i still needed the tablets which i couldn't have produced at short notice,so in future any one who has toe nail problems with dogs,if in doubt, rip it out, higgins. Indeed if you read the specs on medications like eyecreams, skin medications etc, and determine the active ingredient and its w/v concentration you can find a finer quality equivalent for human use in your chemist. keep Brolene as standard for superficial eye inquiries in dogs , liquid and cream, will treat v quickly, much quicker than vet preps slight scratches to eye surface. Also Savlon Wound wash for flushing out any abrasions post work , and when gone get a 500ml bottle of standard savlonn break open wound wash bottle top pour half cap conc savlon in and top up w cooled boiled water, new bottle wound wash, after flushing with wound wash, removing debris gently without handling etc. then apply organic aloe vera gelly with tea tree oil generously, you can see how the dog reacts the savlon is gentle and non stingy, the gel is soothing cool and so pleasant. My modicum is human quality meds and vits etc for dogs adjusted accordingly fordosage, but never skimp quality just for a dog. Quote Link to post
FPO 0
Ok so vets are expensive, some of them more than others and yes some of them are rip offs, Generally down here in cornwall they are more agricultural based and have the honesty to tell you if they dont have a clue. Yes do get charged a consultation fee of £20 but no differant to call out charge by other labourers. However the one thing no one has mentioned Is insurance. We have two lurchers and insure them against vets bill and thrown in are a few other not so plesant and hopefully unecassary extras (death cremation cost, replacement after theft, third party libility) SO far we have been lucky and not claimed off it but for under £100 a year got to be worth it. Say dogs live for 15 years paying that out each year still could come to less than once bad incident where the vet is needed. Quote Link to post
sighthound1811 6
some vets are nothin more than thieving b"$%^rds.....try an get your dog along to one who is either into working dogs themselves or who comes recommended from someone who works them an takes their dogs to them...ours ain't too bad..my dads terrier broke his back leg jumping over a wall an also tore his ligaments an damaged all his muscle,he had to get a titanium pin put in his leg ..cost us £489.00 which is a lot cheaper than we thought it would be....by the way the dog is a staffordshire bull an he made a full recovery except a wee touch of athritis in his leg..well he is 11 y/o....cheers Quote Link to post
