ROB.BOB 21
I've tried searching them on the forum and there's not alot about them. Dose anyone have first hand experience with them as i really like them and would like some first hand comments before looking at pups. Also would they take well to grouse beating? There's plenty of GSPs and GWPs that are great so why not a bracco. Quote Link to post
fabiomilitello 37
Of course, my grandparents always kept them. They point out game as good as an English Pointer, and they have an amazing nose on them. They are bred from a GSP and a Bloodhound. They are very versatile as gun dogs. I'm sure you could train it to do anything. Edited January 8, 2015 by fabiomilitello 1 Quote Link to post
stroller 341
I have never seen one work but I have spoken to a lady who works them and she says they make better falconry dogs as they range literally for miles. Im not sure how a dog like that would fit into a syndicate pheasant shoot or in the beaters line of a grouse moor? I do like the look of them and if someone would give me one I will definitely give them a go Quote Link to post
ROB.BOB 21
Stroller you seem to have a lot of experience with HPR's from reading other posts. Surely a dog will only range as far as it needs to catch a scent and not go past birds for the sake of ranging further away? or am I being naïve?I've only got experience with pointer labs, so not very like proper HPRs. jessdale 416
A dog will range as far as you let it. If I was after a Bracco I would be going to have a look at this litter when it arrives. http://www.champdogs.co.uk/litter/35524 1 Quote Link to post
stroller 341
It all depends on the ground your shooting I suppose if there is a lot of game about they will naturally work closer but if not they will do what they are bred for. like ive said I have never seen one work so im not sure if you can rein them in Quote Link to post
Lab 10,979
I've also never seen one work but If it's anything like the Spinone then I stick to what you know. Of course it's your choice but I don't think I could be bothered with a breed I know very little about when there's so many other tried and tested breeds to choose from here. 1 Quote Link to post
ROB.BOB 21
All very good points, I might just get another pointer lab then, or maybe try and find a springer cross, seen a few of them before. Quote Link to post

What's the fascination with x's mate.? I really don't know, I've got a first gen pointer lab, a second gen pointer lab and what is meant to be a lab but I'm convinced he has a dose of spaniel in him somewhere. I lost my oldest lab a while ago now but for some reason I don't fancy another, I like spaniels but other than a black and tan cocker like my old one I'd rather have something a bit different like a cross. That's fair doos. Your the one that's going to have the dog for years to come. I sometimes think in the gundog world your taking a bit of a risk when crossing breeds. Of course you might get the best of both worlds but equally there's a chance you get the worst traits of both breeds. Quote Link to post

I think I've been lucky so far, my first cross is a total arse in the kennel (barking & eating everything) but Im really happy with his work - great on the grouse and is steady with lots of pheasants running ahead in the Sitka woods, points when stuff sits tight and picks well to at 15 months, plenty of time for it to go wrong yet though Quote Link to post
ROB.BOB 21
And I enjoyed the usual "what the f#*k is that?!" comments when you jumped into the wagon, had a lot of guns asking about him too Quote Link to post
stroller 341
Rob they are called the Pennine pointer in this area as a lot of grouse moor keepers have them. From what ive seen they do the job but if they are better than either of their pure bred parents im not sure Quote Link to post
