year 1955, decent numbers for me, manchester terrier, and whip x grey, christ those were the days, im still at it now in 2015, i dunna bother about numbers, never have, but i can tell you this, im now

When the going is good you make the most of it with your dog ,theres a alot of times in the year you cant do owt for some reason or other.fill the car up and get on the road.

its nice to no you can do the numbers and have the dog to do it,,even when you do slow down a little

Giving the dogs runs on big numbers of rabbits like that what age would you let a dog start trying to bag up? I know different dogs mature quicker or slower but what season would you really test your dog 1st 2nd 3rd ? Atb AT

the only answer i can giv...is you will know......others may have diffrent veiws...but mine is its your dog and u know when ur dogs ready

thou goes without saying not a pup lol

you no when your dogs had enough he misses a few he had twenty minutes earlier , when he is having to dig deep for a rabbit his running stile differs ,time to put on the leash and go home happy ,some lie down for a blow some look for water all signs that you should give him a break ,ive never got a dog in a strict regime for cacthing rabbs ,just trot them side of jeep or over setaside feilds or stubble when they can do a good few miles and get a quick blow then up looking for more youll see there fitness ,coming through ,

if your on good rabbit land a clever dog in his prime makes it look easy , when we done all the borders of scotland early ninties to mid ninties was great sport ,fri nite after work get dogs food clothing money ,away for some fish and chips shoot some pool in a pub ,come 9ish winds blowing time to rock we had an old subaru estate gl model , we would have a drive round quick lamp see whats on offer , park on the land and lamp till we could get what the butcher needed ,average nite early oct ober was 30 to high seventies on one farm ,we could drive from pasture to pasture , pick rabbits up each feild we finished ,come 1 0r 2 we would drive back run a few big arable feilds for hare or whatever bed for 4 ish up early and check dogs sort game out and over to butchers etc good sport ,had some right laughs ,a few nites we had to push subu out of wet holes ,the problem back then was the price for rabbits it was poor 50 p75p broke my heart after a while ,

the best rabbit dog i had was metal and was a rabbit drop box took 450 in a week but was not sport got asked to do it for a favour while i was out lamping and ferreting by a neighbouring estate ,

bird you would had loved down the scottish borders in the late eighties early ninties , alot of the farms were just grass and a lot got paid for setaside so the rabbits were not checked , so for 5 or 6 years it was great for ferrets dog work day or nite , then the goverment stopped paying them the same for setaside ,then paid them grants to put rabbit netting up box traps etc crazy ,

late august the feilds moved and the rabbits cued up to get through the gaps in the rabbit netting on some bits ,took 48 of one feild a 100 acre grass feild , there were another 3 400 acres to drive round , brilliant ,just price was poor ,

my problem back then was getting helpers who liked rabbiting ,and keen people ,,had allsorts out hunting up on these parts over the years ,great land for rabbiting trails , just about as good as the land i have now ,

all the best

Different type of land darn sarf,..and obviously, nowhere near as much acreage as oop North,.but back in the 1980s/1990s ,..we had plenty of rabbits, all along the South coast...

We was out every suitable night...never, ever stayed in a job for more than a few months,...I could not hack it,...I just went out with the dazzler....

It was addictive,...years and years of night walking....I did not want to do anything else,...

But,..times have changed, the rabbits are gone,..so apart from the odd relapse, I rarely bother going out at night...I am now 90% cured....

In truth, there is more to life than chasing poxy rabbits...

All the best, Phil.

a feind of mines one bbc chef of the year we do alot of bizness as the scottish rabbit lol tastes alot better than the frozen french rabbit ,and no shot pellets fresh netted or fetched back
