Nudge... Thunk... Whack

Rez

I haven't posted much in the hunting write ups, not that I haven't been out and about, I just haven't really thought about taking my phone. On this occasion I did.

I thought I'd get out for a few hours as this is the last day of the holidays before work tomorrow. The sun was super bright, kinda warm and to be honest, I couldn't of picked a better day to get out. I came across 3-4 tree rats and 5 rabbits, all of which I had no chance of getting the rifle to my shoulder. My perm is a mixture of soft sandy fields and 3-4 random 500 metre squared pockets of trees, some of which I haven't really had a go at. Today I thought I'd have a wander around these out crops.

The tool of choice was my delightful .22 97.

With the rifle over my shoulder, I had a trek round. While walking through an open area within a large group of trees, I disturbed about 50 pigeons from a large 'sitty' tree situated in the middle of a massive bramble bush. I decided to have a look and see what the chances are of sitting it out underneath some nearby trees and waiting for the birds to return for the last of the afternoon sun. Within moments of plonking my back side down, I bird arrived at the back of the trees shown in the picture. A shot I normally wouldn't take on, but with the HFT confidence still there, I estimated the distance to be about 45-48 yards. Through my Menace, the target was crisp and clear and I gave 2 and a bit mil dots. This is about the same as I give for the 45 yard drop down on the course, so I'll miss by misjudging the range or I'll drop the pigeon. Bit of a kick and a thunk sound and the bird drop out the tree.

The second bird went a similar way, but at the front of same tree, about 32 yards. They came in in large groups, allowing me to pick the best shots. Again, thunk... Down it went, not a flap.

The third bird of a large group landed in the tree I was using as a support. Little bugger. I did manage to turn around and as it stuck its neck out, almost knowing that something wasn't right below, my 97 nudged and I saw the Field hit 1/4 inch below the neck, down it went, only to fall within 2 feet of where I was sat.

The forth bird was a bit of a gamble... It landed with only about 2 inches of its chest area showing, but just enough to thread a shot though at what I found out was 36 yards. My 97 is zeroed at 25, so again, thinking of the HFT course, I gave one full mil dot, only to see the pellet glint in the sun light and actually loop over the large brand obstructing the shot and land where I had hoped.

The bloody 22 is heavy, but my god it hits with a bang...
