A rod is the most efficient when at right angles to the fish(not the water), simple case of physics. It's down to the angler to make up tension when a fish runs at you.

Northern lad you're right about summer time Pike, So many people think that Pike are indestructible when they are quite venerable, especially in the summer.

I disagree mouths are readily torn.with this heavy handed approach but hey no here to argue atb cheers

Not an argument, heavy handed causes issues, i have had carp over 30lb, snag fishing, you need to be fully locked up, and drag them out, after that, then nice and gentle and play then to the net

yes iv done the same but the fish these lads are reeling in at speed are small pasties on barbless hooks i just dont see it doing the mouths much good and many a time blood everywhere,not very often you would damage a carps mouth if played correctly cheers
