blitz87 49 Posted January 4, 2015 Report Share Posted January 4, 2015 As title says alot of people think all ferrets are workers maybe they are to a degree but i first realised they werent equal when i was a kid i lost my two jills in a set so phoned my dads mate and asked what to do he said he would come up with a couple jills and locater the the second he dropped his ferrets in rabbits were bolting all directions my ferrets had been in and out of these holes and never shifted a thing thats when i seen the light ha ha. i did get my ferrets back they came out when his were in they hadnt killed a thing they had just layed up i didnt keep them ferrets long after that pet homes.my dads mate gave me two white jills and ferreting was a different ball game alltogether with these no mucking abouti kept them until they died age 7 and 8one got blinded in one eye but still worked just aswell. The point of this story has been to let beginners know when it comes to working ferrets try and get them from tested working stock you will have alot more succes.what do you look for in good working ferrets? 8 Quote Link to post
johnrthrfrd 223 Posted January 4, 2015 Report Share Posted January 4, 2015 Good working ferrets are worth there weight in gold had a couple of sessions last week first day took 2 young Jill's from this year both worked ok and done the job and they will make the grade. Next day took my 2 old favourits both about 6 or 7 years old what a difference no messing about getting collars on straight down hole rabbits out followed by the ferts no nipping back down when you try to get them worked a hedge about 50 yds long no nets just flushing for the lurcher set both ferts away at 1 end of hedge and they just went from hole to hole working up the hedge real old pros. No messing put there box at end of hedge after they worked the hedge both wandered over got in there box gave a look as to say there's nowt left in there the 2 young Jill's will get there with experience but what a pleasure to work the old pros. Like you say not all ferts work had a few of them in my time so when you get the good ones look after them will be a sad day when these 2 owld buggers pop there clogs. 3 Quote Link to post

bigadam 0 Posted January 4, 2015 Report Share Posted January 4, 2015 I had a corcka chesney a big ginger hob best ferret I have owned or seen work he died at 10 he has bolted 1000s of rabbits a few rats a fox and an owl. Shit mi self [BANNED TEXT] owl bolted. Luckily we were using long nets so didn't have to untangle it out of a net. No I'm after a big hob but can't find one Quote Link to post
Longers7 720 Posted January 4, 2015 Report Share Posted January 4, 2015 Took me a couple of seasons to work this out as well, been using a couple of Jill's for last 2 seasons, they bolted a few but I always felt like they could be doing better, then got my hands on a proven working Jill... WOW!! She don't mess about, used her Friday on her own, and I don't think she failed to bolt at least a brace of rabbits from each set we ferreted, then put her in a real big set in a hedge, rabbits were bolting left right and centre!! She won't leave until there's no more in there, I wouldn't go out without her now, I also have her brother which I'm yet to try, but I'm hoping he works just as thoroughly as his sister!! It's mad to think you could pick up a ferret for a fiver, a real good worker should be fetching £500!!! 1 Quote Link to post

Its the idea some people have that all ferrets are workers that's the problem because they breed whatever they have, breed for working ability over colour size or anything else. 1 Quote Link to post
TOMO 25,991 Posted January 5, 2015 Report Share Posted January 5, 2015 Well said blitz,,,some ferrets just don't make the grade,,,and just skim around bolting the easy stuff,,,,but then not facing stubon rabbits that are reall deep or arsed up,,and throwing the odd punch with a hind leg,,,,seen it many times,,,and sadly somtimes with ferrets I've bred myself,,, In fact just this year,,me and vin,,,have got a lot of new stock in,,from difrent lads up and down the country,,,and it's been a breath of fresh air,,,one young hob in particular of moxy off here got us from a mate of his,,,really is a machine already,,,only 6 month month old,,,and misses nothing,,,,mind you,,,you better not be afraid of the spade,,, 2 Quote Link to post
