If i was a fan of any other team id be saying he was the best English midfielder of his generation........but its hard to heap praise on someone that broke your heart !

I followed liverpool in the "boys pen" late 60's,then stood with the men on the "KOP", seen some great players and some mediocre,Dalglish is still my best liverpool player ever to pull on a red shirt

So he,s off at the end of the season and I wish him all the luck in the world , it,s been a privilege watching him over the years ,at times he was the closest I have seen to a 1 man team ,he improved

No getting away from the fact he was/is a great player and some if his performances have been truly outstanding.......his loyalty to his area and his club can't be faulted

BUT

I always have to ask myself why a player of his ability never wanted to test his ability in with the very best?......to better himself and win more stuff with a club that gave him a real chance of doing that?

He could have got into almost any team in the world and played alongside the very best.......guess we will never know.

As has been said, it's been a pleasure to watch him play

Do you really believe that Wilf ?.......Dont get me wrong i think he was absolutely brilliant in the premier league probably the best midfielder of his era..........but im not sure his drive and power would have been suited to say La Liga......the speed and strength of premiership football suited him down to the ground but do you think he had the poise and touch that clubs like Barcelona look for ?

My honest reply is "maybe" but as a sportsman, unless you put yourself out there and compete for your place amongst the very best then you will never know........that was the point if my post really mate.

hes not gunna fancy flick a ball and dribble past you but yes he would have made a difference to any team, mascerano went over there and helped so in sure in wotever capacity stevie would have helped whoever he played for, what gets me when a player is in his last days people come out and say nec things, totally pisses me off, phil taylor will be the next one oh he was that good oh there wasnt much around ffs..

Personally I think in his prime he could of played in any country.

As a midfielder he had the lot, an engine, could pass long or short, head the ball, tackle and score goals.

I can't think of a fault in his game to be honest, no he couldn't dribble like Messi or Ronaldo ( but not many can), but he was a driving runner,

For Barcelona, ac Milan, man UTD ( at the prime of his career) he wouldn't have been the biggest name in the club, at Liverpool he always was ( even more than Torres, Suarez would have taken that now if he'd stayed).

But he won the champions league, fa cup and if it was for him slipping against Chelsea ( I bet that still hurts) he would of capped it off with the league.

For me he was the complete midfielder.

Who,s saying negative things  .....you are aware this is just a conversation about footie on the internet no need to get so angry.........and whats Mascherano got to do with anything he,s a completely different type of player to Gerrard.

I think he was genuinely torn between going to a higher level / winning more trophies and staying loyal , he knew that winning things with Liverpool would always mean more to him than finishing his career with an impressive c.v He could of gone to Real in 04 , Zidane rated him the best midfielder in the world at the time and badgered his manager to sign him , There is no doubt in my mind he would of been a success in Spain or Italy infact a move there would probably have made him an even better player , definatly richer ,

Sometimes a home town boy is just that and Loyalty and sense of duty over rides personal ambition , I am grateful to him for sticking with us .

Maybe im wrong about Gerrard i just dont really remember many of our power/drive type players being bought by the big foreign clubs before they seemed to either go for the finesse players like Hoddle or Gazza......or the outright goalscorers like Lineker or Owen......wasnt it Xavi Alonso who recently said theres only 2 English players who could play for Barcelona, one was Sterling the other i think was the Everton boy i forget his name now,the scouser.
