If i was a fan of any other team id be saying he was the best English midfielder of his generation........but its hard to heap praise on someone that broke your heart !

I followed liverpool in the "boys pen" late 60's,then stood with the men on the "KOP", seen some great players and some mediocre,Dalglish is still my best liverpool player ever to pull on a red shirt

So he,s off at the end of the season and I wish him all the luck in the world , it,s been a privilege watching him over the years ,at times he was the closest I have seen to a 1 man team ,he improved

Watched the Fantasy Football thingy the other week where a panel of Matt le Tissier, Paul Merson, Phil Thompson & Charlie Nicholas picked an all time Premiership eleven. Scholes & Lampard were quoted for midfield but they went in the end with Gerrard & Viera. In the end it's all down to 'what you like' but for me I'd have Gerrard as one of my first picks in that team..., but maybe alongside Keano!

Seen the draw?....Chelsea could get Millwall, that will be some crack ! Lol

my oldest brother got seriously injured by chelsea supporters about 1985 i think, after a cup game. think a chelsea youth player got slashed and there was a whole heap of trouble after that game. and you know how people remember such things.........i'm kind of hoping millwall dont get past bradford cos there might be some fun and games otherwise

They,ve had a few tussles since then mate dont you remember the Fa Cup game in 95 when they took it on the pitch and Chelsea fans were attacking Millwall players running off the pitch......it was always a lively one and the fact they havent met for 20 years should make it interesting.

I followed liverpool in the "boys pen" late 60's,then stood with the men on the "KOP", seen some great players and some mediocre,Dalglish is still my best liverpool player ever to pull on a red shirt closely followed by a few more, Steven Gerard was at best a good player but never genuine "World class",he suffered to many injuries in his early career and always pulled out of anything heavy,I watched him carragher, owen, mateo come through as kids and then into the reserves which I went to the games every week, Gerrard never had a decent game and always came off the pitch a poor second to the likes of Vierra,Roy Keane,Figo, etc, these men were all leaders on the pitch and could psyche people out in the tunnel before kick off, a talent shared by the likes of Tommy Smith, the great Jimmy Greaves once came to anfield and was at the top of his game, top scorer for Tottenham and England when Tommy leaned over in the tunnel and put a piece of paper in Greavesies top pocket,he went white and needless to say after 5mins Smith comes in with a heavy tackle leaving Greaves asking to come off, after the game Smith gets asked what was it you put in Greaves top pocket and Smith replied"it was the menu for the Royal Liverpool hospital tonight",needless to say we won that game before a ball was kicked. World class midfield captains can organise a side on the pitch and demand that bit more when it matters,Gerrard thought by him trying a bit harder it would do it, RESPECT is earned on the pitch but he always came a poor second to the players previously mentioned, the champions league final was his finest hour but those type of games were all to rare, the younger fans that have never seen a league title won only have the recent history to compare whereas us "ol farts" can remember the true greats from previous true world class teams, the leaving of Gerrard will help us to play better free flowing football and not keep giving him the ball to hold up in midfield or like all players that slow down, start playing it backwards.he can take a penalty or a free kick but then so can I,that doesn't make him World class, the difference was all to plain to see when he blew the title with early celebrations last year,he lacked true leadership when it was most needed, only my opinion as a life long liverpool fan and football coach, WM

wow good post wirral, dogleash was great but i thing gerrard would have matched well in any generation and is up there in my view, its all down to opinions aint it..

No....some of it's down to decisions, Gerrard could'nt truely hold centre mid for club or country.

Thought he missed Berkovic (sp?) greatly, a player adept at stroking a ball into that inside fwd position for Torres whilst opponents double worried about Superman.

I'd add Bryan Robson to your list above Wirral, taking Barca/Maradonna/schuster apart at trafford (was it the 1/4's) was equal to stevens great final, just was'nt a final..speaking of which, the pool gk that night gets little mention in the Gerrard final...the double save with seconds to go were outrageous.

I love listening to the old stories from years back ( im not convinced football shirts had pockets in mind you :D ).....ive heard Greaves say Smith was the second hardest player he played against behind Chopper Harris.....some of the tales he tells about him are worth reading if you like all that old stuff.....i think them olduns are left very bitter about the way the game has gone which is a shame......

Cracking post there Wirral countryman always nice hearing the opinions of folk who have been through the different eras.
