Shooting Sticks

Recommended Posts

I've never used shooting sticks before as I'm normally shooting out of a golf buggy and use my bipod, or there's a tree or fence or something to lean on somewhere.

Last night though I was in the middle of a golf course with absolutely nothing to lean on and Mr Reynard about 200 yards away down the bottom of a slope blissfully unaware I was there. I suppose at a pinch I could have laid in a muddy puddle and used my bipod, but I managed to shoot it freehand (shooting god that I am) Sticks would have been ideal and made it a lot easier.

My question is, what are the pros and cons (apart from having to carry them) of bi/tri/quad sticks?

was useing them last night walshie the deerhunter tripod ones , really stable to shoot off but beggar me holding lamp in one hand setting up sticks with rifle slung over shoulder damn nightmare to set up right ,especially holding them slightly open while trying to get a wee bit closer , i also have some home made ones saying that ,i wouldnt go out without the sticks with the weight of my rifle

I use the trigger stick tripod, when I am out calling/waiting for deer, and they are good, however I find them heavy and counter productive to walk with, as it tells you not to use them as a walking stick, But when I am roaming around/stalking on foot I carry just a normal pair of sticks,as in B+Q specials with a rubber band around the top,the thing with them you can use them to as a walking aid, as in a stick if you need to, like all things when you use them for the first time, they take a little getting used to,but once you do get used to them you wont use the Bipod as much, I have taken mine off,the rifle at the moment,I think some times we carry too much, which for me takes the pleasure out of it,my backs Knackered so I have to think about what I carry and how that,s distributed,so for me I am turning more and more back to sticks, each to his own.

Nice work moxy.

Walshie, me and my mate shoot out of a truck but there a few spots worth checking on our perm which is easier to jump a fence rather than drive. We have a sticks bungeed under the shooting platform on top of the truck. 2 18mm dowles from b&q and a couple of heavy duty elastic bands 6 inches from the top... I think we have shot 4 or 5 this season using them..
