You're right mate looks never killed 'owt :)

She's certainly not the nicest shaped lurcher I've had,but she's learning her trade pretty quickly  Just the retrieving to work on. :hmm:

I had a walk out tonight with Jimmy,I took my pup Amy who's just short of 10 months and Jimmy took his air rifle. We were out at 7.45pm and back home at 9pm.There were a few rabbits about Jimmy shot 3 and Amy caught 6.

The best run of the night saw the bitch running up and down a bracken covered bank before she finally caught the rabbit, she retrieved the rabbit about 100 yards but stopped 5 yards short.I must admit though her retrieving is a bit hit and miss.

  • 4 weeks later...

I took Amy out tonight with the lamp,it's been a couple of weeks since we were out due mainly to the frost. There was a reasonable blow and the moon was hidden by the clouds so I was looking forward to some good runs. :)

It didn't quite pan out as I had envisaged. What rabbits were out were very flighty,as soon as the lamp was on they were off. :( In the first three fields Amy only

got the one run which was a long shot,it dissapeared down a bank before she got to it.

Amy got the first rabbit of the night in the fourth field, she picked it up just before it reached the hedge. She got a second run in this field, again it was a long slip as the rabbit was moving a long way infront of us.Amy managed to get on terms with it but after a turn it was into it's bury below the hedge.

The next two fields didn't produce a run  the rabbits that were there were all below the hedge.

In the seventh field we saw the first squatter of the night,it was 30 yards away so we headed towards it.Half way there up it got and made off towards the hedge with Amy on it's scut. Two or three turns up and down the hedge then Amy had it safely in her mouth. The retrieve was far from perfect but I did get the rabbit back alive.

The next field was a small maize stubble field which usually holds a few rabbits. There were rabbits in it tonight but most of them were around the perimiter.Amy got a run at one which was sat out 20 yards from the fence. She caught it after turning it away from the fence, again the retrieve wasn't 100% but eventually I got it back alive. ;)

That proved to be the last run of the night,we did walk a further 2 fields but there were no rabbits out in the open. :( Possibly due to the fox that followed us as we went through the last 2 fields.

Pics from tonight,[not the best quality].

Looks mean nothing. Some of the best dogs Ive had have been ugly cobby things which wouldnt get a second glance. My 2 old dogs look like something you would pick up from the local dogs home  Do I care? Do I heck, they do the biz and thats all that matters. Tote I think she looks smart and if your out there killing stuff with her, thats the main thing.

You need to get Buddy out when hes a bit older and see how he gets on :clapper:

I know what you mean about looks, looks never filled a freezer.

I would take Buddy out SJM, but :hmm:

Not sure if they are keen on the idea :hmm:

Steven would be up for it but Elaine might have different ideas.

I think it would have to be a sheep free field.

I must admit I like the look of him.

Aye she did say she wasnt keen on the idea of working him, shame as he looks to have a racy shape and a decent turn of speed, a lot faster than my pup anyway! Hes not too old to break to stock, a few walks around some small paddocks, run the sheep past him, couple of stern tellings off, its harder to train them to retreive as they get older, and basic recall needs to be put in early on too, but jumping, stock training etc can be taught at any age really.

The only thing I dont like about him, and this was the main reason I never kept him, aside from him being a dog, is that he is very whiney, this trait comes from the grandfather and is very strong, theres always a couple of pups in any litters off him that do it, I call them more greetings than a Christmas card  I always watch the potential choices for a few weeks to see which ones are whiney and which ones are quiet and pick the quiet ones even if they dont have as nice a shape cos I cant live with greety, whingey dogs. But if that one fault is overlooked he has the potential to be a smashing dog, hope you manage to persuade Steve into it

I agree with you regarding breaking to stock, but it's not me or you that has him

that might be the biggest problem.

I totally agree with what you say about whiney, greety dogs they do my feckin' head in as well.

Both Amy and her brother Bob are that way inclined, and whereas it really annoys me Jimmy [bobs owner] can turn a deaf ear to it.
