A FEW BUNNIES

Recommended Posts

I had phoned the landowner last night and was going to have a shine after I got back home from a committee meeting of the local fishing club. But when I came out of the meeting the wind and rain had stopped :( The full moon made it like daytime so I had to cancell.

It was a different story tonight though, There was light rain with plenty of cloud cover so Amy headed out for a look in the fields. There were a decent number of rabbits out tonight but all of them were lamp shy which ended up with Amy having some quite long runs.

Added to that the grass was short and the rabbits knew their way home  The bitch done alright though and managed to put 7 rabbits into the bag. :)

When I got back to the car I couldn't get the tail gate to open :wallbash: seems like the lock is :censored: luckily for me we weren't far from home about a mile so I walked the bitch home then went back for the car.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pic due to the rain and the lens steaming up.

I decided to get out early with Amy tonight in the hope of getting some runs before the moon got up.I asked my sons if they wanted to come with me,Dylan the eldest is always keen and he said yes straight away.Declan who is more into sports especially football doesn't usually come but tonight I got a surprise when he said he'd come along. :)

I told them we wouldn't be out for long and that's the way it turned out,we only did 4 fields. The first field was a stubble field and held no rabbits at all.

The second field was also stubble,Amy had 3 runs and managed to get them all,one of them was a cracking run and catch right infront of the boys."She's got it by the back legs dad," Declan shouted excitedly.

The third field was grass which had been cropped short by sheep and the fence infront of the wood were the rabbits ran to was just 4 strands of plain wire. The first rabbit Amy ran she caught just after it had run past me and the boys.

So that was 4 on the spin for the bitch, :) all that changed with the next half a dozen runs or so as the Amy missed all of them as they fairly flew up the hill and shot straight below the fence. The runs had come one after the other in quick succession and the bitch was doing a bit of blowing so I gutted the rabbits before we got to the next field.

I told Dylan and Declan to stand at the gate of the last field which again was grass pasture as I took Amy in to see what was about.100 yards into the field I could see 2 clappers so I walked out towards them. When we were within 30 yards I sent Amy up the beam towards the rabbit just before she got to it up it got and away it went with Amy hot on it's scut.It was making it's way towards the gate the boys were standing at they had a perfect view as the bitch picked the rabbit up only a couple of yards short of the gate. They told me later they were both going to try to kick the rabbit if it had gone under the gate.

Amy had 2 more chases in this field managing to catch one of them making a total of 6 rabbits in the bag and 2 happy boys.

Good stuff Tote.

I hope my girls decide to come along when they are older. I am not going to force them if they dont want to but my eldest (2 and 1/2) loves playing with the ferrets and loves the dog so fingers crossed!

You're right minion we can't force the kids to go out with us all we can do is give them the oppertunity. My eldest,Dylan would go out lamping at every chance he had. :)

Declan only goes once in a blue moon, yet Declan loves sitting down to a plate of rabbit and tatties, while Dylan won't eat rabbit.

When I was gutting the rabbits last night Declan kept saying is that one for my tea dad?

Thanks for the comments lads.

I went out again with Amy to the same fields as I lamped last thursday night. It wasn't such a good night there was next to no wind and it certainly wasn't as dark. That didn't seem to make any difference however as Amy accounted for 7 rabbits tonight,1 more than thursday.

Well after going out last night with the longnets and having a pretty poor return for our efforts[14 rabbits] Jimmy and I headed out again seeing as the conditions were ideal, very strong winds and the odd bit of light rain.

Jimmy wanted a to shoot so he brought his AA S410 along and I as usual took Amy.The first two fields were dissapointing with only the 1 rabbit which Amy accounted for going into the game bag.

The third field had quite a lot of rabbits in it but they were mostly lamp shy,we did get in range on one of them and Jimmy knocked it over good style.Amy caught another 2 in this field and the rest of the rabbits had moved off to their buries.

The following 2 fields held plenty of rabbits but due to some poor shooting from Jimmy and the bitch not performing at her best we only got 3 rabbits out of these fields 2 for Amy and 1 to Jimmy.

We skirted up the edge of a stubble field next and Jimmy knocked a rabbit over at short range with a nice head shot.Amy also caught one at the edge of the stubble field but let it go before I had my hand on it and before we could do anything about it it got through the fence and dissapeared into the wood. :wallbash:

Although Jimmy had some more shots and Amy had a few more runs only one more rabbit was added to the bag,Amy catching it in the last field,it was her 100th rabbit.

We ended the session with 9 rabbits6 to Amy and 3 to Jimmy. Both Jimmy and I knew it should have been a lot more, mind you they'll still be there the next time.

Apologies for the quality of the pic,the camera is doing my nut in.
