Pup Howling

Recommended Posts

Just got a Saluki grey pup 12 week old it's only been in the kennel a couple of days but it's crying and howling I no it's natural for a pup at the beginning of it persist is there any tips for helping it settle in? I don't want to be heavy handed cause of the nature of the dog with it being Saluki

I have a Saluki grey already and if I had hosed piped that it would of ruined the dog doesn't take much for them to be wary of you

Thats why you do it from the house and run the hose to the kennel so it doesnt know you have owt to do with it.

Wont work at the minute though cos the water in the hose will freeze and blow it of your tap..

Salukis especially, but all dogs, are social animals. They don't appreciate being shut away on their own. Every single Saluki lurcher I've had has been reared in the house and they are easy to house train and very relaxed if you understand their mind set. Imagine being taken away from everything you know, your brothers and sisters and mother, and being shut on your own in a kennel: this might sound anthropomorphic, attributing human emotions to dogs, but the principle is the same. Remove a young animal from it's mother and littermates and you have a very lonely, scared and unhappy pup. It makes sense to rear them as close to you as you can: they are easier to train, respond better and develop more intelligence if they are reared alongside you and your family. I never could understand the point of having a dog and keeping it shut outside away from the 'den'. People actually might learn more about dogs and especially their own dogs, if they bothered to adapt to a certain extent and keep the dog's needs in mind, as well as their own.
