stubby 175
Ive had my mk3 for about 6 weeks now, very confussing to begin with, but keep at it, and it becomes clear, you have 2 modes, and 1 switch, to switch between them, firstly in search mode, this gives you a 16ft area of search, either above or below ground, hold the mk3 in ya palm with the thick end facing you, you scan the area, if your near to the collar you'll get some beeps, and the LED's flash at 16ft, as soon as you get this signal, you can search more, if you get nearer, the "beeps" get quicker and the LED screen will go from 16 to 14 to 12 etc, therefore its quite easy to tell if your getting closer of further away, once the LED's get to about 4ft (lowest) you then flick the switch to LOCATE this narrows the area down to an 8ft depth, again, either above of below ground, again following the same rules as when in search mode, you can home in on the collar to within 6" (inches) you also have a pinpoint knob on the underside(i never use it, keep it turned up full) which can be used so that if you go away from the collar, the beeps cannot be heard, but only as you move closer, Ive used it with great success with my ferrets, not only to digs, but also just to "see" where they are when ferreting heavily bushed area's 1, the beeps are to loud, place electrical tape over the speaker holes, works great 2, if you have ferts in a carry box wearing collars, remember to place box at least 16ft away from search area, or it will pick them up, and make you feel a right plonker(yup i did it) 3, batteries can be fiddly to get in, do at home before going out in morning, saves dropping batteries in grass (no aint done that) 4, practise in garden, getting someone to hide the collar, 5, using it makes you feel like captain kirk from star trek, but you get used to it, 6, always check what mode its in, search first, then locate, think this is why alot of peeps get confussed, they use it in the wrong order hope that helps Quote Link to post

It's probably because you've switched the search/locate switch instead of the on/off switch!!! In all seriousness, it's an fantastic piece of kit. Quote Link to post

Axholme Ferreter 0
Good review Stubby. I changed from a Mk1 a couple of years ago and once I got used to the slightly different way of using it I think the Mk3 is a great bit of kit. I have been there with some of the points you raise especialy not putting the box with the other ferrets in far enough away lol. The collars are a bit more fiddly for me on the Mk3s and I have had 2 occasions when they have come off. Last time I found the collar and put it in my pocket. Some time later I spent several fraustrating minutes trying to find a ferret that had been out for a while. The Ferret finder was showing it very close but I could not see it - then I remembered the collar in my pocket If you are using several ferrets it is not always that easy to keep an eye on them all and the search mode is brilliant for finding where they are, I once had one that had wandered about 50 yds away from where I thought she was and I doubt I would have found her with a Mk1. ( I did have to walk up and down a bit they are not that good!!) Another big advantage is that the Mk3 is no affected by electric fencing. A lot of my rabbiting is near horse paddocks and the ineterference on the Mk1 was a pain. All the best AF Edited October 30, 2007 by Axholme Ferreter Quote Link to post
stubby 175
alot of users dont like the mk3 collars, saying they come off, it happened to me twice, the first time I used it, but was my fault for not putting them on tight enough, do think that they are alot easy to put on one handed while holding a fert. and once over the fear of strangling ya fert, thick the wideness is brill for not coming off, and units lays better on the next, easier for then to get through nets without tangle Quote Link to post
