Ronisillah 26
Just a little question for who ever, am not digging at deerhounds cause ave never owned or seen one run but how come the pit bull majority have or been bread for flighting and most commonly . But yet deerhounds Alone, u just never here of it u automatically think pitbill would be the more agrresive so cross to the greyhound would be the more Gamest wouldn't it? Haggis81 147
when you talk about game and stamina, good feet... Where Deerhounds not originally bred to course deer from start to finish, either kill or bring it to bay until the hunters arrived, running ruff terrain up and down glens in adverse weather conditions north of the border ? Not talking about todays over sized show stock but when the breed standard was first drawn up, dogs 28-30 inch bitches 26 inch at the shoulder, On their own turf, taking into consideration terrain conditions ect would the Deerhound come out on top? against the more popular breeds being run today. Not another animal I have seen will do the job a deerhound is made for in the hill ground in Scotland, some of the land is hard enough to walk on, rock faces waist high heather hard land for a dog to run for 20 mins then take on a red. You will never find one now but a proper old school deerhound be as hard and game as anything going, they would need to be to do the job. On the other hand using them on the low land fields they are big not got the pace and agility of the lighter made greyhound x lurchers. I have had them and used them, smaller bitches the best chance. northwestmitch 9
Cheers Haggis81 , So the breed was bred by people who had first hand knowledge of the environment and the prey it would be hunting and never ment it to run on the flat like the saluki or the fiery make up of bull breeds all bred with a purpose. MickC 1,825
Credit were credit is due. When FTM had the Lurchers back in the day he was arguably the main man round our way in the Lurchers ,nobody was out more, doing more and catching more and he owned/worked some of the best dogs and that's the truth. When he says the Deerhound he had was useless it was still probably more than enough dog for the majority of people. Anyway back on track, the best pure Deerhound I ever saw was a bitch called Purdy bred by AW and owned by a mate of mine up North. This bitch had it all and was ran in the wilds of Scotland on all terrain and all quarry day and night, unfortunately some toff shot it but that's another story. Rough terrain is were a Deerhound comes into its own,be it a valley, out on the hill or up a mountain . Edited December 23, 2014 by MickC 1 Quote Link to post
Silversnake 1,099
A good deerhound is the most magnificent of all sighthounds imo. Not the best for hare or rabbits but still more capable than most pure breds bar whippets and salukis. But put whippets and salukis on fox, deer, boar, etc and you will appreciate your deerhound especially in rough terrain. Greyhounds struggled here in oz because of rough terrain and tough quarry so the deerhound was infused into the breed and those problems disappeared. I also believe they have the best temperament of all sighthounds. It breaks my heart to hear the decline of this breed, it is truly one of my favorite breeds as a pure and especially crossed with other sighthounds to add toughness and strength. I also love bull x (especially if they have a bit of deerhound too) but I know I would rather hunt with a pure deerhound than a pure bull. Think about that you full of bull people. 4 Quote Link to post
lurchers 2,747
Ive always had deerhound/greyhounds and they have always done the job i like the beddyxs zo if you mix the pair you get a nice x.its finding good working ones now as the fashion statement is bullx or salukix, the last ones we ran were dhxgh 2nd cross and they had a bit more fire and smaller than the 1stx but we dont no why they made 25-26tts and a pleasure to watch on everything.im hopeing to get another dh/gh or with whippet in it to bring them down to 23-25tts. DanRaistrick 53
I've got a Deerhound Greyhound bitch and she has great stamina and prey drive. I've not put her on anything with teeth yet as this is her first proper season working, but she's more than capable with 'soft game' so far. Her sire was a first cross who took all UK quarry and was a very game dog, although like people above have said I don't think the DH cross would have the same bite power as a Bull cross. But at the end of the day the poachers of old times used the cross which was very successful for them, but with the way the Kennel Club is ruining breeds genuine working bred Deerhounds and Crosses have become much harder to come across ATB, Dan Quote Link to post
stevemac 433
I have owned a deerhound /greyhound she was a wonderful dog that took all game there is to offer in Australia. interestingly enough I bred to a I/8 bully/stag just to give a bit more endurance in the wrestle when catching pigs. the deerhounds my dogs are breed from are some of the last working deerhounds in Australia and as far as feet and endurance I would like to see any sighthounds do as well on large game. Deerhounds do not need bull blood to handle there game and some would say it is a hinder to endurance the kill ability of a good deerhound is very impressive The hardest thing these days is finding quality deerhounds like most breeds no longer bred for work and majority owned by ribbon hunters. 4 Quote Link to post

lurchers 2,747
The good thing with deerhoudxgreyhounds is the way they suss the job out as they are fast acting in brains when they take the leading roll,as if they know where there quarry is going to head to before they do.a lot of people underestamate them but dont relelise the prey drive they do have and the things they are capable of doing for a dig dog.
