All Rounders

Recommended Posts

Gaz we both said halfxs as the best allrounder weve seen so we must agree on this somewhere

We must do.

"All rounder" means full package, "does it all", "turn it's hand to anything".

That's not my opinion. That's just the way it is.

To then start changing that and saying "it depends what the owner wants from the dog" and "we all have different opinions" is madness.

I just don't know how opinions can come into a thread like this. The dog either has a bash at anything or it don't. And yes a lot of that comes from the owner doing a variety of different stuff with the dogs. Me or you will never have the time or (certainly at the moment anyway) to raise and school an all rounder at everything listed in this thread. So we could own a dog with the potential to be an all rounder, but if it ain't doing it - reason regardless - it ain't doing it.

That's my last post on subject cuz we are going round in circles and at this rate we will still be discussing all rounders and Santa will be at the bottom of my bed emptying his sack everywhere!

I think you're absolutely right Gaz, which is a surprise I thought you needed at least 40yrs under your belt to be right about anything on here.   I have a 3/8 5/8 bull grey from point and shoot li

Woah!!..I've lamped a ton, and still do buddy. I was only voicing an opinion, I wonder why my books get mentioned all the time i say something?   Scooby caught everything in the daytime, except red

Just to add another dimension.....I, personally, would only class a dog as an allrounder if it could catch all the quarry I want during the daytime. I have seen plenty of dogs that looked good on the

The guy downt pub also said without bull it's just a dog, easier to get a bullyx rabbiting Than it is to get a cur collicky type to track wounded fallow/Fox on a regular basis, makes sense to me

Amen to that.

So after 10 pages it's decided.

Get yourself a bull cross ?

Best dog I seen would take all on the lamp from rats up to deer all things with teeth, but during the day could also find and rundown the same quarry all singlehanded and the only input the owner had was taking its lead off this dog was bull grey x bull grey

Reading through all this brings the reality that few have any real idea whats needed in a dog and its breeding to produce a jukel that as the ability and aptitude to become something of an allrounder. The ability to consistently kill a daytime hare was a critical aspect of an allrounders capabilities, thus that alone whittles out an high percentage of what some may perceive to be an allrounder. Many allrounders did not need coursing pace or wind as they had knack of hunting up and taking an hare either off or within a few yards of its seat, the art of hunting up again takes many a dog out of the equation. Then the dog needs to be able to mark, jump, retrieve -water and land, traverse over and around walls, fences, hedges, nets etc.etc.,obey command and more importantly work on its own initiative etc.etc. again. The dogs main ability as to be rabbit orientated as only the hunting of bunnys will ever test a dogs true allround abilities, everything else is a bonus. When we consider what is really needed in a dog to make it capable of being capable of reaching the status of Allrounder, then the biggest factor needs considering, there were few in the past and far fewer now that had the ability, inclination or need for an allrounder and there are fewer dogs that are bred or suited to the role.

The only yardstick i use to measure if a dog is an allrounder is its ability to take all four legged quarry by any given method... Everything else is just 'fluff'...!

What about hunting, grabbing and retrieving feather?

Retrieving shot feather wether with gun or catapult?

Jumping?

Having a good temperament?

I thought the lurcher was the animal of choice for the poacher?

Not just a means of "taking 4 legged quarry".

I think the dog your describing mate is the (old type) poaching dog that would do bit of everything, to put meat on the table, and from what ive read the dog was ne-on farm dog mix not over quick dog.in them days hares, rabbits were caught with (long nets) so didnt need fast type dog like that's been bred today , and going about with 1millon cp lamp today its a different ball game . if you was really into getting big numbers hares rabbits, deer, today serious poachers wouldn't fook about with dogs, they use guns if there selling to dealers. the old mythical poacher+ dog is what it is just in books , the proper poacher of to day is worlds apart, I knew bloke in the 80s never used a dog, only for the odd bit ferreting + long nets he use whippet x thing, but is main weapons of choice were long nets+guns
