Just to add another dimension.....I, personally, would only class a dog as an allrounder if it could catch all the quarry I want during the daytime.

I have seen plenty of dogs that looked good on the lamp and yet were too slow for daytime work. Anyone got any thoughts on that? JD

have you ever owned a dog that can do all the above ?.....and if so what was all the quarry you wished it to do ? All pre ban of course

 

Yes mate, Scooby had the lot, except red deer. Both day and night. I don't really bother with foxes (never needed to) so my opinion of an all-rounder would be very different to the next man's I guess. The lurcher i have now i would class as an all-rounder too, but there's a few i need to tick off the list before he gets there fully, though he has caught a wide variety of tackle, and travelled extensively all over the Uk and Ireland and onto some Islands too. This is his second season.

I don't post about what I do on here as all the crabbers come out and have a pop, i just do my own thing quietly away,....hope everyone has a good season....JD

 

a lurcher should catch all edible quarry , and none edible quarry if need be . If you got permission and a farmer loosing lambs to foxes, and he asks to deal with it you will either gun or dog you will . From a deer to rabbit a lurcher should be able to do it, I was told years a go if a dog can catch a good daytime hare, it will catch any quarry , and when you think about its not far wrong a dog got to have (speed, agility, stamina ) to do so and you need all this , plus guts to take all quarry in the UK .

 

I like a dog use its brain and show this by how it hunts & tackles different quarry e.g. an experienced deer dog would take a muntjac in a different way/style to a fallow

Yeh bit of brain as well , ive got a dog that will wreak stuff , but bring back a rabbit live with hardly a mark on it , which is very good considering he got a jaw like crocodile lol

I don't know Darcy, nor have I read any of his books. But he seems a decent, knowledgeable guy to me. What's the problem EDRD were you thick at school, a poor reader and therefore have a deep-seated jealousy/resentment towards all that fancy book learning stuff? You should try reading mate. You can learn a lot. Surely part of the attraction of this site is that you learn from others. Don't be so bigoted EDRD.

Most of the extras that have been mentioned are relatively simple for virtually any half decent lurcher to do, however the FULL range of quarry is a totally different matter. You cant train a dog to have heart and bottle, its either in them or its not. And finding a dog that genuinely has these qualities and can pass them on to its offspring is a rare thing indeed.

All the decent dogs ive had have had natural speed,Having it fills a young dog with confidence,Young dogs that lack it soon start to loose confidence.

Also agree with guns if you want your lurcher to work with them good for you but it aint a lurchers job.

Ferreting dogs are very useful its great to see one that really knows the score,But ferreting for dogs is a bit like sex,You get a decent work out but it aint hard work,especially when your using nets. lol.

Had a lurcher to lurcher, collie blood in there but racy she did everything I can think of but foxes, only had a chance twice, first one just got through a fence before she caught it and the second she rolled over but it bit her in the mouth and she left it, like i said not a fox dog that one! fair to her she was bleeding a fair bit. She took daytme hares regularly, over 4 or 5 working years she caught about 250 of them. rabbits muntys roe game birds even partridges out of the sky! magic that! loved squirrels would retrieve pigeons and pheasants for me worked at night all though back then i didnt do so much of that. Was a pleasure in the house just lied about on sofas - so relaxed. good gaurd dog she even caught a weasel once! cant really think of what she didnt do other than foxes she was killed by car whilst she was coursing a hare. I don't like jumping though so can I still call my dog an all rounder even though she don't jump?

 

She won't work with ferret and she isn't stock broken either.

 

But none of them things bother me so she is an all rounder in my eyes...

Half cross bull or there abouts going to athletic type with very good feet. A bull terrier is hard to beat for intelligence stamina and guts. Greyhounds are clever dogs and also have a nose. Ive caught more mixed bags with Bullgreyhounds than with any other type.

I thought that's what we had established from this thread? An all rounder was each to their own and all based on the owners opinion?

 

I aren't much for running rabbits either. Luckily my dog jacked on them. But she is still an all rounder because it doesn't bother me ?
