All Rounders

From the replies here it shows how widely people's view of what an "allrounder" is varies. For me its taking ANYTHING that gets up. For others its also doing a gundogs jobs etc

I don't think there are many lurchers, if raised properly and taught some basic obedience, that won't work the gun to some extent. At least flushing to the gun and retrieving shot game.

My old bitch picked it up after a handful of outings and whilst no expert she certainly did the job.

Your pup will be more than capable if it's something you fancied in the future.

An all rounder for me has to do all the above, jump, retrieve to hand, work with ferrets, work with bushing dogs, and also have a good temperament and be a pleasure to be around in general. Just as happy in the pub as in the field. These neurotic mental sorts that need work 24/7 are no use to me.

lady did sure put some game in front of my gun......been acouple of times this season I've missed having her there.......

I think you're absolutely right Gaz, which is a surprise I thought you needed at least 40yrs under your belt to be right about anything on here.   I have a 3/8 5/8 bull grey from point and shoot li

Woah!!..I've lamped a ton, and still do buddy. I was only voicing an opinion, I wonder why my books get mentioned all the time i say something?   Scooby caught everything in the daytime, except red

Just to add another dimension.....I, personally, would only class a dog as an allrounder if it could catch all the quarry I want during the daytime. I have seen plenty of dogs that looked good on the

An all rounder to me is any lurcher that will try its paw at anything.....jack of all trades master of none

I agree. But that should include more than just "taking what gets up".

That's not an all rounder I don't think? That's a point and slip dog. Point it at anything and slip it at anything.

"All rounder" shouldn't refer to the quarry being run. It should refer to the dog in general. Moocher, lamper, ferreter, busher, companion animal, work off a slip or work from heel, work the gun, work from a vehicle. Etc.

Maybe I'm wrong. Usually am ?

She was an all rounder in my book. Nothing she wouldn't have a crack at.

We are getting into opinions now and thry differ from person to person

That's what I'm saying though. I don't think it is down to opinion. A dog is either an all rounder or it isn't.

What me and you want from our dogs doesn't matter.

You don't ferret. So your dogs will never be all rounders. That doesn't mean to say they won't excel at everything you do and want. They just won't be all rounders. My bitch will never retrieve big stuff so she won't be an all rounder. Just because I don't want her to that doesn't make her an all rounder does it?
