I think you're absolutely right Gaz, which is a surprise I thought you needed at least 40yrs under your belt to be right about anything on here.   I have a 3/8 5/8 bull grey from point and shoot li

Woah!!..I've lamped a ton, and still do buddy. I was only voicing an opinion, I wonder why my books get mentioned all the time i say something?   Scooby caught everything in the daytime, except red

Just to add another dimension.....I, personally, would only class a dog as an allrounder if it could catch all the quarry I want during the daytime. I have seen plenty of dogs that looked good on the

How can it be an allrounder if theres certain things it cant/wont take?

You are missing what I'm saying Fella.

Of course it's gotta run/take all quarry. I said that.

But just doing the above does not mount to "an all rounder".

It must ALSO do the other stuff mentioned by everyone previously.

Otherwise it ain't an all rounder. It's a point and slip dog which will run all quarry.

An all rounder to me is any lurcher that will try its paw at anything.....jack of all trades master of none

I agree. But that should include more than just "taking what gets up".

That's not an all rounder I don't think? That's a point and slip dog. Point it at anything and slip it at anything.

"All rounder" shouldn't refer to the quarry being run. It should refer to the dog in general. Moocher, lamper, ferreter, busher, companion animal, work off a slip or work from heel, work the gun, work from a vehicle. Etc.

Maybe I'm wrong. Usually am ?

I have a 3/8 5/8 bull grey from point and shoot lines, I've talked about her on other threads. She will be 8 next year and has taken everything expected in good numbers, all single handed I very rarely go out with others. She will kill rats work with ferrets, retrieve fur and feather to the catapult, airrifle and shotgun. Does a days beating without a lead in my pocket, more than can be said for some gun dogs I see. She is my constant companion, at work with me all day everyday, my children love her, she breaks the ice were ever I go, contractors, lorry drivers etc who come to the farm all know her. She's worked from a slip, at heel, from a vehicle. Even my 'titled' bosses always make a fuss and ask if she isn't with me. It feels embarrassing to say it, but she genuinely is a good alround dog, not the best at anything, but more than good enough at most things.

Every ones opinion of a allrounder is different is it just a dog that does what it's master says and refuses nothing ?

That's what moorside is trying to say I think.

But if he never asks his dogs to go ferreting or work to the gun and they do everything he asks and refuse nothing then can he call them all rounders? I don't think so.

But as said I could be wrong.

An all rounder what doesn't go ferreting or work the gun isn't an all rounder.

It would be like having a cheeseboard without the Stilton.

And there we have it.

I rest my case.

First time I've ever been right about anything on THL. 40 years in the game ?

Bugger, Hares! I forgot about hares. I'm not overly keen on eating them so never really bothered. She caught one in norfolk once, I'm not sure who was more surprised, me, the dog or the hare. Think she's accidently caught 3 or 4 in nearly 8 years? Sorry lads I retract my last statement she's not an alrounder.

I nearly have an all rounder IMO. She will mark and ferret very well. Run the beam and still fast as feck. She will work cover but not like some dogs,Even swims faster than a lab. Does everything I have ever wanted, Most importantly she has come back fighting after every injury she has sustained. shes messed up her feet but will run again and always give 100%. Luckily we haven't had any injuries until last night when she hit a ditch and has strained a muscle in her thigh. but she hobbled out and was pulling on the lead when fox came in close. However I didn't run her obviously.

I will like to put a match dog over her next year, she only ever lacked wind on long runs. If I get another one like her I will be happy but it be nice to improve on her faults.

shes whippet grey x deerhound collie

Flush to the gun at fairly close range without hunting up a mile in front.

Recognise when a shot is fired and find the shot game. And retrieve to hand.
