20-30 Years ago I never had permission and poached many areas, police in those days werent bothered and didnt know the difference between rabbits or hares, but with change in hunting laws and the PC brigade for the last 20 years my hunting has been done with permission, and yes its hard work obtaining and keeping good permission, we have pest control business cards made and call with them, we also have written permission slips signed by the land owner and placed in a file which we carry with us, look after your permission will lead to getting more, word of mouth from farmer to farmer and the business cards does work, Im too old and fat to be running away from police and wildlife officers, building up permission takes more than two days it can take years, stick at it and it will pay off. true regards the ban, its a different ball game now, where as 20 years ago a farmer wouldn't get out of bed to chase you of his ground at 3 am, now they would. ive found over the years best to say nothing to farmers or keepers and just go on, and get few rabbits and piss off quick . the reason I say this is because, when you asked the farmers or keepers and the answer is a big (no) what you've done is let them know your about,? and want to run your dog , so they will be looking out more for you. where as if you say nout they got to find you 1st ? why make it easy for them . If you got permission great look after it but the days of me going round knocking doors to get a big no, forget it just for dozen rabbits .!!

 

I dont get permission to just jump a fence for a few quick rabbits, I did it for peace of mind and being able to enjoy good days out ferreting and bushing and lamping, without being chased, arrested and hassled all the time, when we were challenged we produced our file and were left to get on with working our dogs, sit in peace have a coffee and a crack, enjoying good days and nights, not bad really in areas where rural crime is rife and wildlife officers have arrested lads and confiscated dogs and vans for up to 6 months, especially just over the border, some have won their cases, some have lost and never seen their dogs again and faced massive bills for their keep,, I know which I prefer and its the former but maybe Im just getting old haha.

if poaching thiers certain rules i follow.

1.dont lamp near houses overlooking the intended poaching ground.bound to get someone call the bill.

2.dont go on keepered ground,normally lads with radios on night shift.

3.stick near footpaths,after all you walk your dog here every night.your just a bit later than normal as you worked late.

4.shine a little,walk fast.

5.leave the field as you found it.

6.take game away,dont dump it to be found by farmer.

for anyones info i dont poach,have lucky enough to run on several farms.

I would,nt say its easy to join the club,because it certainly is,nt,well most of the time.There is more land about thats never shot over than some realise,guns and shooters are an easy excuse for a lazy outlook.Permission is usually to be had by the folks that desire it and are willing to put in the effort,some of which takes more effort than some wish to put in.

Thats when you go to the 101st farm.I used to set of with the mutts with hunting intent,on the journey id visit several farms and test the water,then go hunting and test the water at other farms on the way back.After a short while it became a pointless exercise,especially with some of the ignorant twats that own the land,yet i carried on and often made a nuisance of myself by re-visiting and asking again,especially if the land warranted it,which i knew it did because i hunted it.I would not be over exaggerating to say ive been knocked back on at least a thousand occasions,the 1,000 and one i was successful,then it got easier,i had a toehold,its hard,very hard,yet its easy hunting and the hunting laws are far less restrictive when your on permission.

go to the local pub,if farmers are in thier you can make conversation,slowly,they will see you as a decent,reliable person.it takes time.knocking on doors will not get much.renting a space,store,container,etc etc will be good,get to know the farmer,pay your rent up in advance,offer him help.then you can mention ferreting first.i understand different areas maybe more difficult than others.

Oh how times have changed remember it used to be a bit of challenge if you new good ground where the farmer wasnt that keen shall we say. One night me and me cousin pushed our luck a bit two far and the farmer pulled a sneaky. Rough old night good lamping weather but the farmer snuck up the track in his landy with out his lights and crept in the top of the field with it. We were smack bang in the centre and first we new he lights up the whole field and floors it down the hill straight at us. It was wet and quite a slope so at that speed he had no control and as we split up our trusted ploy he went sliding straight between us giving it some large verbal as he went flying by and by the time he got it under control we had hit the cover

I absolutely bricked it but back then it was all good fun and there was never really a worry of police involvement. But now a days permission is much less stressful. It is out there you just got to keep trying and gain there trust.

If I was landowner I would not give anybody permission, I want my share of the buzz chasing poachers with my land rover and man biting dog.
